Transatlantic one-ways

Is there any way to buy a one-way flight from Europe to the US on Oneworld at anywhere close to half the price of a round-trip fare, using cash rather than miles?

I know on BA they seem to force you into buying the full fare ticket If you only do the one way. Buy the other direction for a year out and hope to use it later?

Often us airways has fares that are half or close to half the round trip price. Only carrier I've had any luck with.

Which cabin ?

For Y at least, AB does NYC from DUS for < EUR450 one way. J is around EUR1500. Slightly higher from STN or for through fares from other origins requiring a connection.

Any help ?

Buy 20,000 AAdvantage miles for around $580 (less when the frequent bonus offers come up, usually 20% - 30%) then turn around and redeem them on AA, IB, AB, AY, or BA over the pond.

I flew ba Bos-lhr one year ago for about $350 one way, with a 7 day advance purchase. Things may have changed.

Edit: May have been during a sale or some type of promotion??

Oneworld not easy. AB would be best option. If you're flexible, Kuwait and air india are usually cheap one way from UK to NYC, around $500. Need dates and routing.

While we're on the subject: Does anyone know a one-way US-Europe (reverse direction from what the original post asks about) that's cost effective? I used to use BOS-DUB (routing BOS-AA-LHR and onwards) but there's no longer a cost-effective one-way fare on that route.

Sorry I missed that part.

Gardyloo, the problem with that approach is that I want the EQM to requalify for my AAdvantage status. :(

Where and when are you flying from/to?

AB has plenty of sub-€500 one way fares out of DUS to JFK or MIA; however they're in fare buckets that only earn 25% AA miles, so it won't help much on your quest.

Two words... mileage run.

cooberp Nov 17, 2013 8:17 pm

Sub €500 isn't saying too much! You can get plenty of roundtrips for under $700. It sounds like I'm out of luck. :(

Many/most international round-trip rules allow you to combine half of one round trip with the 'return' half of another round-trip. Thus pay half of the round-trip fare for the direction you want to fly, and (illegally) throw away a really cheap coach return.

"Most-restrictive" rules will apply to the pairing, e.g. if one half must be flown within 90 days and the other gives you a year, you'll only have 90 days (if the rate desk is paying attention).
