Each ATM lists which alliances are fee-free; while the Australian big-4 banks do not charge a fee, the network connecting that ATM to your bank can and often does charge a fee (and this can vary by ATM). In Australia by law the ATMs much display whatever fee they charge prior to completing thie transaction, but this excludes network fees (zero in Australia but not zero in USA). Citibank tends to be the most widely free of fees. Also some banks will refund any ATM fees charged by the operator (sounds like your bank does not do this). More important is the exchange rate used by your bank, some do not use the standard rate and it can be much worse. I've found 5% difference between the best and worst banks that I personally have checked in the US, which is a huge spread (and pure profit).
