Cairns- 48 hours - one full day and 2 half-days - what to do?

Will be arriving on Mon April 23 on flight around 12:30 pm - from Hobart (via an intermediate hub). Leaving on April 25 on maybe 4 pm flight (to Sydney).

Obviously we want to see the Great Barrier Reef. Want to see (if possible) one of Daintree rainforest or Kurunda.

What are our best options?.

Not far from where the Hilton Cairns hotel — at which I recommend staying — is located are boats which will take you out on a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I went scuba diving using one of these boats; but you can also snorkel as well. Lunch or snacks aboard the boat are usually included with the rate.

I had a rental car and was able to reach Kuranda within 40 minutes. I recommend the train ride; although I have been on better train rides.

Daintree Rainforest is five hours round trip by car from Cairns and thus is probably not a good idea due to your time constraints if you decide to go to the Great Barrier Reef instead.

I enjoyed driving around the Atherton Tablelands, which is three hours round trip by car from Cairns and certainly possible...

If we prefer not to rent a car - is there a 1/2 day guided Kurunda tour - maybe on the 1/2 day that we leave Cairns - 4 pm at the latest.

You can take the train up and the skyrail down (or the other way)
Taxi/uber/walk to the stations in Cairns

Kuranda rail.

Can one do a 1/2 day Great Barrier Reef tour - leave very early on the tour early April 25; then arrive back early enough in the afternoon to check out from the hotel and then go to perhaps onto a 5 pm CNS-SYD flight.

Then with the full day, go to Daintree over Kurunda. I think Daintree would be the better option - if one could only choose between the 2 options?

Half day reef tour is not worth it though there are. The trip out to the outer reef is about 60-90 mins one way. Go the whole day and take a helicopter ride over the reef while you’re there. Some of the bigger companies offer this.

Or you can go with one of the smaller companies which is fine.

You can take the railway up and Skyway down in 2/3 day.
Either way 25 April is ANZAC Day, a public holiday so it could be very busy, many people take annual leave around this time so book ahead for tours. You’ve left yourself too little time in Cairns unfortunately to do everything. Daintree is wonderful though if you’re willing to compromise your reef experience and compress.

high speed ferry from Cairns to Fitzroy Island- just enough to do to get a feel for why you need to come back for a week...
