Flying to Melbourne advice please

My wife and I are planning a trip to Melbourne from London to visit the grandchildren.
Only been once before via Royal Brunei, okay but an awful stop over at Brunei airport that was undergoing a facelift (sic)
Looking now for a bargain trip and we came across a Virgin deal that goes via Atlanta.
Its cheaper 590 GBP, and seems to be faster.
Is that even possible ?
Anyone with knowledge of this route ?
Anyone with good trip advice ?
Thanks all

When are you travelling? There are quite a few good fares to MEL from London at the moment, CX(Cathay pacific) and QF(Qantas) are both around 650.00GBP on certain dates and will certainly be a lot quicker than going via the US.
Late last year I went to Sydney with BA(British Airways) and CX with a couple of days in Hong Kong both ways for around 750.00GBP. Something like that might help break up the journey a bit unless you want to just get there as soon as possible. If that is the case Qantas are worth a look, options via Dubai, Singapore and Perth on the new service starting late March.

Distinct possibly it is Melbourne Florida, as "seems to be faster" Route map LON-ATL-MLB
Would not be the first person to do this. Or Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
LON-xxx-MEL is about 22hrs or more. Via xxx in the Middle East or Asia

The Virgin deal (if to Australia) would likely have several transits and the need to get a USA visa waver as you formally enter USA. If Atlanta and VS likely to be LON-ATL-LAX-SYD-MEL on Virgin Atlantic, Delta & Virgin Australia. DL (or any airline) do not fly to ATL to SYD/MEL. Forget about it.

When are you planning to travel?
Economy, premium economy or business class? For some people the extra for PE is worth it on long haul.
Many airlines will get you UK to Australia. SYD has more options than MEL.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbou...port#Passenger
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Airport

From London you could fly from LHR (Heathrow) or LGW (Gatwick) or other airports in UK.
BA will get you to LHR SYD and QF can get you LHR to MEL, SYD & BNE

The Asia - Chinese airlines may be cheapest
CI China Airlines
CZ China Southern
MU China Eastern
Or the middle east airlines EK Emirates, QR Qatar, EY Etihad
Passport / visa requirements would need to be considered.

But you get what you pay for
For me departure time, arrival time and total travel time are more important than price (or frequent flyer miles)

And as this is FT you must get frequent flyer miles for this trip !
