Generally a special line, but depends on the airport. The major airports (e.g. SYD or MEL) all seem to have a special line for failed smartgate use for both arriving and departing passengers. Smaller ones might not (e.g. WLG).

Thanks. I was concerned because of the transit time. Will have to declare a few items so will be at Customs for a while and can't say I look too much like my passport photo so...

One thing that always gets me at Australia SmartGates, especially departure:
I go through FRA a lot and their SmartGates aren't so smart. For one thing, you need to press your passport (my UK one, anyway, which is kinda shiny on the photo page) down on the scanner glass , for it to read properly.
When I do that in Australia (and AMS) , the machine nips my fingers!
Tis has happened at PER & MEL.
Half the time in FRA, machine fails to read I have to go through the manual queue anyway.

Working Holiday Immigration Line
Hello,
I am coming over in May to NSW (as an US citizen) on a working holiday visa in May. All my paperwork is in order and also finances. However, I am wondering if I can use the "Smart Gate" at passport control or should I use the regular immigration desk that all non-epassport holders use?

Don't you just get sent to the "SmartGate Assistance Desk" which usually doesn't have a long line? Not sure if this is the case for non-Australians.

BTW there is a smartgate assistance line which is generally short. No need to use the main manual immigration line.

As a Canadian with nexus- can we use SmartGate when we arrive in Australia next Sat?
We have nexus but are Canadians. So can we use SMART GATE when we arrive in Australia in about 6 days on an Air Canada flight from YVR?
