Actually from SotP you could also get to the Cross via William Street. There's late night there as well, so things like Thirsty Bird, a few pizza joints and stuff. There's also Huberts which is open late and that is up on Bligh Street.

Although restaurant wise you will be struggling for something nice, even places like Palings close at midnight, and when they say midnight they mean midnight.

Even in Chinatown past midnight/10 pm your going to be limited in choice to mainly Golden Century and a few places on Dixon Street. On the train, it runs but still doesn't get you that close to Chinatown. This ain't New York.

The Golden Century in Chinatown and at the Casino have such a big rep but the service is absolutely horrid and the food is really just okay. It is great if you want your $10,000 bottle of wine but that's it.

Sunday night is a dead night.

There's Mamak that's open very late if you want exceptional Malaysian food. That's on the edge of Chinatown. Agree Golden Century is highly priced and service terrible but food is reasonable.

Hubert's is not open on Sunday night.

Quite frankly to get really good food, I'd probably Uber/Taxi to Surry Hills or Potts Point or Darlinghurst. Even Newtown.

Sunday night in the city is a ghost town.

Try this link which has articles from some well known Sydney chefs:

Oops - misread the day, thought it was Monday night. Scratch Huberts.

I would go for Cafe Hernandez in the cross, it's kind of like a diner/cafe.

The other alternative is Chat Thai down in outer Chinatown as well but even in Surry Hills the restaurants are pretty dead.

There's not even some place like L'Express to hang your hat on.

I really think that's why Golden Century gets the late night custom it's really the only full sit down restaurant that's open, food is acceptable but horribly overpriced and service is horrendous.

I think that article is pretty spot on. The two most common that I'd go to is Golden Century (Ginger shallot steamed fish is my go to dish there) and Madang for korean BBQ goodness. I haven't been to the new BBQ King yet but that probably should rate a mention somewhere

Agree. Golden Century seems to be good according to the actual user recommendations. I didn't get the mention of Redfern, but can vouch for that. Otherwise, the article is useful, but only for partial reference. It's more about promotion and long sentences than useful info.

Been to the Golden Century and The Century at the casino many times. I cannot recall a time when our entrees actually arrived at the same time. I just put up with it as we often want a quick feed before going back to Casino or doing something else in town.

Why would you expect entrees to arrive at the same time at a chinese restaurant? They're not meant to

Because if I want to eat one entre and husband wants to eat soup as his entre we eat at the same time. I don't want to sit there and watch him eat his soup.

They also don't bring rice or noodles with the main meal. I've had it arrive after we have finished our mains.

For the appetizer just ask, the traditional Chinese starter is just the soup with the others after.

For the rice and noodles this is just poor service as even the country restaurants know to do this.

ok I settled on westin sydney and will find out where to eat afterwards. quick question on the surrounding and sorry for being off topic, is it safe to go for a run alone during the night or early morning (2am to 5am ish) in the city? Particularly hyde park or the opera house/botanic garden area.

It's safe. Personally I wouldn't go through Hyde Park during those hours, but if you're running you're going to be a lot sharper than anyone who might be looking to do you harm at that time of the morning.

You'll quickly get the feeling that Sydney is a pretty safe place, just take the usual precautions that you would anywhere; if something feels wrong then just cross the street to avoid it.

The biggest danger you'll face will be from Sydney's cyclists who are often arrogant and insane.

I wouldn't run through the parks at those times.

Any reason why you'd want to run between 2am and 5am?

Particularly on non Friday or Saturday nights, it's going to be eerily quiet...
