AKL -> Taupo
Okie dokie --> making a "points run" to AKL from ORD end of November and will be knocking out the fancy McDonalds in Taupo on the overnight. Driving from AKL looks to be the best option so I'm open to same day routing: Google maps shows either HWY 1 straight thru or via HWY 1 & 5. Is it worth it to take HWY 1 down, 5 to Rotorua, then via 33 & 2, then 1 back to AKL? I arrive ~ 0800 and would like to be back at airport hotel by 1900..think flight out ~ 0900 next morning. Bus timing doesn't look too convenient...

Not an easy drive considering jet lag, esp. if your MR is on Oneworld making the flight longer. I'd stick to the easiest routing, some of the more scenic roads are metal (gravel).
