Best New Year's Eve in Oz, that's NOT in SYD

We're fond of spending our winter (Dec/Jan) down under. We've done the SYD new year's eve thing enough. Does anyone have any thoughts on other good options?

Easy choice: Melbourne. Fireworks over the Yarra (not quite as spectacular as Sydney harbour) but makes up for it with lots better food at restaurant NYE events and hotel prices that are half Sydney's. Pretty good party (maybe better given the lack of the insane Quay crowding).

Other option is to go very isolated. Southern Ocean Lodge is great for that, but expensive ($1000+ per day).

Melbourne NYE is pretty crowded too.

To steal from Paul Keating. If you are here on NYE and not on Sydney harbour, you're really just camping out somwhere

Try Byron Bay

Anywhere on the coast. Lorne used to be a favourite.

Brisbane, QLD, along Southbank is a great spot for viewing fireworks. Not as good as SYD Harbour Bridge, but they have fireworks on barges on the river, off the tops of the high rise buildings across from Southbank, and around Kangaroo Point Reach toward the Story Bridge.

Or if you're into a beach setting, the Gold Coast has fireworks on the beach.

Every major city/town generally has some sort of fireworks event for NYE: the scale just depends on the city's budget. Just watch out though, the further north you go, you may run into the Wet Season, which may put a dampner on the fireworks activities.

Another vote for Brisbane. I have done NYE in Brisbane and the fireworks are impressive. It isn't that busy either. A good point also is the public transport is free on NYE in Brisbane and it runs late. So its easy getting back home.
