9 hours in Melbourne, how to get to town?

In Melbourne for 9 hours, landing 9:15AM and departing 6:35PM a week from Tuesday. So, really a few hours to roam around.

Want to go into the city.

Will have 2 rollaboards with us, which makes me favor a rental car to throw the luggage into. Driving on the left side of the road for the first time makes me favor public transport.

I guess the other options would be to find a storage place at the airport, or check the bags to our final destination, although I really don't like checking bags.

Any advice on how to get into town with or without the bags would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.skybus.com.au/ is best way to get into the city. There is luggage storage at the airport and at Spencer St / Southern Cross rail station - airport bus terminal. A car in the city will only cost you many $$ to park. And there are road tolls

Take the bus, walk 300m south towards the river & get on the free city circle tram.

Have lunch at the Southbank - Crown complex on the river

Thank you so much for the detailed information. I much prefer to use the Skybus.

Very excited to go to Australia and New Zealand for the first time!

YMMV, but as a fellow tourist (though one here for a number of months for work) I think exploring the laneways and eating somewhere like Hardware Ln, Flinders Ln, etc. offers more local flavor and better food than the Crown complex. Again, everyone has different taste, but to me the Crown restaurants feel like they could be anywhere.

^^^
The Laneways etc are what make Melbourne the city that it is - Crown complex could be anywhere in the world. It's a while since I've visited Melbourne, a city that I love, but I suspect that the muddy Yarra hasn't lost its reputation as the river that flows upside down
