Trying to carry 9 bottles of wine on a JQ flight might not work as it might exceed the JQ weight limit for carryon 
But security certainly allows unlimited wine quantities for domestic Australian flights, quite nice.

My gf is looking to take a case of wine (12 bottles) on a MEL-SYD Jetstar flight at Easter as hand luggage. She will have no other hand luggage other than a handbag. Has anyone had any experience doing this?

You'll get away with a 6 bottle case but a 12 bottle case will be well over the weight limit for carry-on.
