Status matching on Delta

Status matching on Delta
So I emailed Delta regarding to the AMEX/SM double mile promotion (before I found out there is a similiar promotion link that you can put in BOTH WP and SM numbers) basically asking them if I can link my WP number to my AMEX cause I don't want to use my SM account when I fly because I have no status with SM. This is what I got back.

Currently it is not possible to link your Delta SkyMiles credit card
with American Express to your WorldPerks account. However we are
forwarding a matching SkyMiles Gold Medallion request from your
WorldPerks Gold Elite account xxx-xxx-xxx with your SkyMiles account
xxxxxxxxxx to our Elite Team for handling. Please allow 4-6 weeks for
this to be processed.
Interesting response. Too bad I'd rather hang on to using my WP account for as long as possible.
