6/2/09: NW335 DTW-LAX diverts in Waterloo, IA (ALO)

According to a Detroit Free Press article, NW335, a 752 enroute from DTW to LAX, diverted in Waterloo, IA because of pax/crew smelling smoke.

Here is the Flight path of the plane. Any first-hand reports of this episode?

Almost 180+ people. Yikes, that's a lot of people to try to deal with for an airport like ALO.

Not too bad for an unexpected visit to Iowa if you ask me! :D

But seriously, glad it was safe and uneventful.

Who flies the occasional DC-10s into ALO? Is there anything resembling that type of demand for the services of FedEx?

The airport is not far (2 miles) from my house, but I wasn't in town at the time. As the DSM Register article states, they only have planes like this about 5 times/month, with typical commercial traffic being much smaller planes. Saw some footage on the local news, and they didn't even bring out the jetway (??) for them, had them come down the stairs instead.

Have to agree on the hospitality of Iowa though. We were hit by the floods last year in Waterloo (though not nearly as bad as Cedar Rapids) and you saw alot of neighbors helping each other out, no matter what someone's own situation was. One of our neighbors lent us a sump pump which we traded back and forth to try and keep the water down in our basement. Then again, is it really being hospitiable offering people a free shuttle to the casino?:D Welcome to Waterloo! Please stop by our casino and leave your money! Just kidding.....kind of.;)

I was dumped by this delayed flight so that I was transferred to another flight and my next day's flights were canceled because of it. Can I get my miles back?
