Combining NWA and DL Miles?

With the two airlines merging (or DL buying NWA) - is there a possibility of combing the two FF accounts? I have some 20K odd miles in my Delta account and 70K in NWA -- Travel agent snafu and me not being careful enough. It will cost me my NWA gold status as I end the year on 39K.

Anways, looking fwd would I be able to combine the two accounts? The other reason I ask is that I have some 27K Membership Reward points that I can transfer to Delta but don't want to do so unless the two FF accounts will be merged.

By the end of 2009, your accounts will be merged.

Early in 2009 you'll be able to transfer miles from one account to the other.

I was in MSP for business the first week of December. It was mentioned on a local TV station (either FOX or NBC - not sure which) that the merging of accounts should be occuring by mid-year 2009.

To clarify, it looks like there are going to be 2 steps in this process:
1. First we'll be able to tranfer miles between our DL and NW accounts soon, early 2009.
2. The actually folding of WP and SM programs into one program, whatever it is call and how ever it will look, will be late in 2009.

Other than redemption and/or to prevent losing expired miles, are there any reasons to consolidate miles early?

Question

For those (of us) whom have no SM # ...
Might we expect to be issued *new* numbers , or just continue with our NWA # ^ ??

Don't recall seeing any 'official' position on this detail...

Since Delta numbers have a different format (10 digits vs 12 for NW), I would think you will be assigned a new one if they go with the Delta format.

Well, I've got 17k orphan miles in DL so that'll top off my 300k in NW. Dang I really need to burn some miles ASAP. Plus it would be a good way to weed out lots of zero'd out accounts.

NW went from 9 to 12 digits a few years back. My 9 digits got 3 zeros added to the front. I would do something similar with the DL 10 digits so that there is less confusion and potential for mix-up.

How odd. Mine's still just 9 digits. Please no needless zeros for me!

My RC FF# got a zero in front of it to create a nine digit #, but I do not see any more leading zeros in my NW WP account # either (not in my account statement or my SE card).

I hope DL will keep our NW #s, since I've had this one (minus the leading zero) since the early '80s.

I'm sure the miles will eventually get merged, but does anyone know whether EQM's on the two airlines earned in 2009 will be combined for determining elite status in 2010? I asked Delta and NW and couldn't get a definitive answer. Thanks.

Just rechecked, my Delta # has 10 digits. My NW is 12 digits, no leading zeros. Both were obtained in the past 4 years.

No definitive answer has been published yet by the airline(s). Just keep all your mileage-earning in one program until any rules are announced.
