That was a case where the calm, very shallow water and deep mud of SFO bay acted like foam on the landing. Again, in the right circumstances it can be done but the odds of a ditch happening in great conditions is slim in this era of very high tech equipment. Nowadays, if something goes tat wrong...you are in trouble.

Yes, of course, hence the wink. :)

I remember when that all happened, and am still amazed UA was able to hoist the plane out of the water and deliver it back to JAL in just over four months.
