arrives Beijing at 8:35pm

arrives Shanghai at 6:30pm

neither allows for onward same day connections out of either city

I did not know that. It was HKG at one time a while back but I knew that was changed. Make that another "direct" to Asia.

I know that as recently as late April of this year NW1 was LAX-NRT-HKG. And I have the (lack of) mileage to prove it.

NW needs to revisit this policy. The strangest thing is that if you search for a BOS-SIN or BOS-HKG award ticket some flights will come up on AF via CDG... very strange!

BTW thanks everyone for the answers- you guys (and gals) are amazing!

Yes. CO's EWR-PEK is very convenient, and better priced most of the time.
