At one time a few years ago almost everyone I knew was homeless due to powers beyond their control! (Hint: my location.) Nonetheless, there is a huge difference between doing something that is genuinely kind and helpful -- and doing something that is not particularly helpful in any real sense but is more about "look at me, I'm so wonderful."
A wiser man than I pointed out that the poor will be with us always. He knew the value of occasionally enjoying a good foot massage, rather than giving the last dime to the poor, instead.

To Peachfront: I have a friend that is homeless due to powers way beyond his control, I don't think any of us should take a first class upgrade for granted or feel we've earned it. You should just feel lucky you were given the talents to work and in the end earn the upgrade. At times the first class meal served on that flight could be the difference between life or death to my friend, and others that face hardship due to talents that they don't naturally have. |
How interesting that you prefer to rely on insult, rather than offer a legitimate argument. You could have offered the "small act of goodwill" of refraining from insulting me for the high crime of having a different opinion. It's America. Like it or not, I'm allowed to have my own opinion.
The reality is that there are two people on this thread who gave up their first class seat -- and one of them was disrespected for it and not even given a thank you. I don't like those odds. I'm not going to give up something of value, to me, that is not even going to be appreciated by the other guy. Pretty simple really... No one else is even willing to admit that they don't voluntarily give up their first class seat. They just quietly look the other way every time a disabled person in a wheelchair boards -- which is pretty much every single flight. What is the point of pretending? I don't do this, and neither do you, and it doesn't make us evil people. It makes us people who expect to get what we paid for. The disabled person had the same chance to purchase a seat in first as anyone else, if it really mattered to her.

interesting thread.
started off about something good and is now deteriorating into diatribes about entitlement. why not share the good stuff. even if it is once every so often. no once forces you to do so, no one guilt trips you. it is your own guilt that makes you defensive. just let it go. here is to more compassionate moments. |
