Really fast upgrade question!
 

Yes I know I am supposed to do a search, and trust me, I usually do, but the new search has not been kind to me, so please forgive the transgression...

I am in the process of booking a plane ticket (DXB-DTW). It will be expensed back to my company, but I am only allowed to book economy.

While booking, I am getting an option to upgrade my itinerary for $300ish + 40K miles. Since the company is paying the base fare, that's not too shabby (I feel) for WBC. But, I am thinking that there will be problems getting the expense payment sorted out if there is an extra line item on the receipt.

So my question -- can I book the ticket and then call to see if I get the same deal? And then the 2nd question -- is this a good deal?

It's a good deal if you feel that it's worth it. Doesn't sound too bad to me. If you're not sure I'd call NW to see if you can do it after book, but I'm guessing it is. Booking into Y or B class, you can upgrade with miles only too....

It turns out that $400 (bad math first time around) + 40K miles only upgrades me on DTW-AMS, so that wasn't quite the bargain for which I had hoped. :p Oh well, I was excited for a moment. :)

Since you are restricted to economy, at least book Y or B so you can get 150% EQM.
