But KIX is not really new. NW used to operate SEA-KIX nonstop. HKG would be nice, but I'm betting that they wouldn't want to use two 744's for this service.

I'm pretty sure it went to MSP-CDG

I think you are right. I remember someone once mentioned that NW does have quite a few US-China route authorities, including SEA-PEK/PVG, LAX-PEK/PVG, ORD-PEK/PVG and DTW-PVG (but not DTW-PEK).

What is restricted is the frequencies, not route authority. If NW drops NRT-PEK tomorrow they can fly SEA-PEK tomorrow.

With that being said, I feel it's a little bit too late to announce a PEK service for Olympics... I'd bet HKG.

We're already getting PEK service...

A few months ago, the Port of Seattle announced Hainan Airlines would be offering 4x weekly SEA-PEK service with A330 aircraft starting 9 Jun 2008. It will be the first North American Route for Hainan Airlines. They are China's largest privately held carrier. They plan on replacing the route with the 787 when (if) it's delivered.

This post has been edited to reflect that no formal release has been issued by NWA Corporate Communications Dept in regards to the new route.

They haven't. At any rate, assuming the quotation is true,
Additionally, according to Mr. Griffin, Alaska Airlines is expected to join the SkyTeam alliance in the near future,

So I'm curious about this "PRnoozwire" release. Apparently it was posted over on Airliners.net with a smileyface and is poorly written. Maybe it's not really KIX afterall?
