However, NW continues to publish fares for west coast to AUS, SAT, and DFW.

I'm certain there's strategy invloved in NW's decision - for example, NW may want the extra bodies from AUS/SAT/DFW to fill up planes, but may not have that problem at IAH -- many IAH flights are being upgraded to the A320 these days, so I assume the flights are doing well.

I'm not ready to believe that NW's withdrawl from IAH-West Coast is a scheme to not compete with CO ... my bet is that the fares will be back soon anyway.

Remember the CO/NW codeshare rules prohibit selling non-stop partner flights. NW cannot sell SFO-IAH or IAH-AUS, but they can sell SFO-IAH-AUS. So, not offering service West Coast-IAH makes sense from that perspective.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. I imagine most of the persons purchasing tickets from AUS-LAX on NW will be routed via CO ... I doubt there's too many persons who would purchase AUS-DTW-LAX -- unless, of course, the price was right.

But customers would probably purchase AUS-MSP-SEA.
