Free Travel E-Cert Question

Got this today in my email:

"Thank you for participating in Northwest's 1-2-3 Free promotion.
As a result of your qualifying travel, you have earned a Free Travel
E-Cert*. Here are the details: ....

Upgrades: Not permitted."

So, the question is, as a gold member, will I be able to upgrade this ticket because of status?

NW confirmed to me that no upgrades means no upgrades of any kind.

I will use mine to ferry a non-elite family member somewhere.
