Almonds!
I just flew from Duluth to MSP on my way to DCA. We were offered a number of snack choices including roasted almonds! A small, but welcome change.

hopefully, spinzels (and pepsi) were still being served. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

If almonds are now available, can cashews be far behind! Hooray!

Why would you want almonds, cashews, caviar, smoked salmon, etc when you can have....

There were spinzels, almonds and something else that I didn't notice. So we had a choice of 3 snacks on a 30 minute flight! I'm sitting at gate C3 in MSP right now, connected up via the wireless network in MSP, waiting for the next leg of the flight. We'll see if the 2 hour flight to DCA offers as many choices.

How does the wireless network work in MSP? Can any laptop with the 802.11b wifi card tap into the netwrok freely? Or is there special access / charges involved?

I don't know where all the hotspots are, but there is good reception the retail shop area, gates C1-C10 and all the other concourses. Just plug in your card, turn on your laptop and launch a browser. You will automatically receive a sign-on end-user-license agreement asking you to agree and provide your CC number for $7.95. [This message has been edited by goblue (edited 09-19-2002).] |

Ahem. Moon Moon is a she.
Originally posted by goblue: Moon Moon probably thought of almonds, naturally assumed that almond cans would make fine hi-gain antennas, and naturally transitioned his thinking to 802.11b. That is my guess anyway. [This message has been edited by goblue (edited 09-19-2002).] |

The second flight leg today from MSP to DCA had spinzels, shortbread and the new almonds! It didn't have the usual lunchette...so I had 6 bags of almonds and 3 diet Pepsis today for lunch/dinner. The FAs on both flights seemed pleased to be able to offer something new to the crowd.
Regarding the wireless access....today it worked great in the gold/red concourse world club. When I got to the DCA gate (most always C3) the flight was delayed so I tried from there and got an even stronger signal. Any 802.11b card (WiFi, iLink, AirPort, whatever equivalent 802.11b brand name) should work fine. You just bring up your browser, enter how many days access at $7.95/day you want, pound in your credit card, and your are off and running. After your credit card is charged, you are sent to your default web page and from then on you can do any internet service you want with email, browser, whatever. It is great to be able to connect at 11 megabits/sec, not have to find a seat with a phone jack, and fiddle around with varous dialing strings and pauses. And the high speed access gives you something to do while dreaming about eating those almonds on the flight. |
for awhile there you could get free WiFi at MSP by going as far as the credit-card screen, then just quitting the browser and starting it up again. but they seem to have fixed that back-door. dang... anyway it works fine with my iBook and Mac OS X despite there being no mention of anything besides Windows in their compatibility thingie.

pderby: Does the access work only for MSP airport, or are you good to go for the number of days you pay for at other airports / locations too?

I'm not positive since I haven't tried to use it at more than one airport (MSP) or more than a day at a time. From what the initial advertising indicates, you can get an account and use that anywhere the service provider has deployed their service.
Here is a link that shows where the wirelss coverage has been set up at MSP: http://www.mspairport.com/msp/travel...cess/coverage/ From this page are other links for more information on the service and coverage at other airports. In particular: http://www.concoursecommunication.com/shell.html From what the vendor indicates it looks like they are setting up or have set up service at Detroit, Pittsgurgh, the NY Port authority and MSP. As reported in an earlier post the MSP Airport Authority web site would lead you to believe that the MSP wirelss service will only work with Microsoft Windows products. The service works just fine with Macintosh Wirless (Airport) interfaces as it should with any 802.11b interface that supports a web browser for the sign on. |
Just an FYI. NWA sent a memo to all FA's stating that peanuts are on their way out, and are replaced by almonds. This is due to so many pax with alleries to peanuts and having to do catering changes. You will see peanuts here and there for the next month or so, untill the almonds are phased in at all catering locations.
|
The person sitting next to me and I speculated that the reason almonds were available might be to accomodate people with peanut allergies. Then we looked at the ingredients on the almond package and noticed the almonds are cooked in peanut oil! Hope the peanut allergy folks aren't also allergic to peanut oil.

They may not need to get rid of the peanuts:
"Tanox peanut allergy drug gets fast track from FDA". Does anyone know if there is a drug for those of us allergic to Spinzels? |
Originally posted by GcM: Does anyone know if there is a drug for those of us allergic to Spinzels? whoever makes spinzels thought they had this shi*ty little product that few people liked. now, they sell it to a major airline and tons of people eat them and talk about them. and, wash them down with pepsi. now that's rags to riches.
