DTW redeye

Thankfully, I've managed to avoid taking any redeyes since last fall--it's been even longer since I've been on one to DTW methinks. So...

Getting to the point--I've got to get to IAD from LAX and my only option is a redeye. Now that NW has only one 757 before midnight I'd imagine Y is packed. Are the upgrade chances good for a gold on a thursday in June?

It seems like such a waste to burn miles on a LAX-DTW-IAD redeye.

All I can offer is a comparison with the redeye from SEA-DTW. Also a 757. Thursdays would be potentially good day for an upgrade. I flew the SEA-DTW redeye three or four times and never had a problem on most weekdays. I would guess that Friday and Sunday are the worst days to get an upgrade on the NW redeyes. Friday because biz travellers that worked a full day on Friday are heading home and Sunday because of Westcoasters on business needing to be at East coast loactions bright and early on Monday.

Well, I went ahead and booked it... the phone agent said that there were less than 9 F seats available so it's a crap shoot.

However, ITN shows--

Northwest Airlines 338
Boeing 757-200 10:20 pm
Los Angeles, CA (LAX) 5:39 am (Next day)
Detroit, MI (DTW) P9 F9 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 K9

I wonder who's telling the truth?

What do you mean? I read that as having 9 seats in First available... It's almost guaranteed that at lesat one of the seats will be taken up by the time you fly; thus "less than 9".

On the other hand, I have never been on a RedEye that was in economy or first.

I like the SFO-DTW red eye as a starting point for runs. Just got back from SFO-DTW-MDW-MSP-SFO run which I used as my "qualifying event". Used the same red eye last Thanksgiving for SFO-DTW-CLE-DTW-SFO. The best part is that the fares for each of these runs were well under $200.00.
