Once I changed flights from MEM-DTW-JFK to MEM - LGA at Memphis airport without a fee. Can I do this with SFO/SJC? I am travelling from DTW-SJC and want to change it to DTW-SFO.

I've been able to do this in the past only at the departure gate (not at the front ticket counter). Some times works, some times does not- it depends on the gate agent, available seats, etc. You must carry on your luggate (or gate-check) at the boarding gate.

Should be in the fare rules whether or not the cities are co-terminals. If so, should be able to accomplish at front desk without begging the gate agent. Makes luggage a lot easier.
