Inter Africa Award Tix through NW

I have tried the past two Christmas breaks to book inter-Africa award tickets and I finally got a booking this time. Nairobi (NBO) to Dakar (DKR) with a connection in Bamako, Mali (BKO) for 25K! Coast to coast, what a deal.

But I tried to request a stopover in Bamako, and the lady said KQ doesn't allow stopovers. I thought int award tix allowed 1 stopover through NW, but she said KQ won't allow it.

I booked the ticket anyways, but I'm currently in the 24 hr window. Can I call back and try something else to get a 1-3 day stopover in BKO?

I don't have a lot of experience booking KQ award tix, but I think that they only allow stopovers at their hub in NBO on intra-africa tix

Nice to see one US airline make intra-Africa international award travel possible for 25k (or fewer) miles. ^^

Nice!

This is really great news. Admittedly, I'm most likely to redeem somewhere short like EBB-NBO where it's barely worth it, but maybe Entebbe-Seychelles with a stopover in Nairobi would be interesting...

Were these e-tix or paper tix? When I used my miles to book a trip involving KQ, everything had to be booked by paper since KQ didn't have an e-ticket agreement with NWA, or so I was told.

How long ago was this? KL is in a JV with NW, and KL partly owns KQ, so it'd seem like they could sort things out easily enough by letting KQ handle it.

I know the 5-segment loop I did earlier this month (KL 1276, 565, 4158, 562, 1279) included a very nice segment in KQ domestic F (KL 4158 = KQ 416), and that was all e-ticketed, through Expedia.

It was booked by calling NW WorkPerks international. (i used the silver elite number, whatever that does). the receipt says "e-ticket number" so I assume its an eticket.

8,000mile round trip for 25K in miles plus $106 in taxes and $10 for phone booking. KLM has the best deals for this flight if you pay $1200, so I think 25K for a $1200/8000mile flight is a pretty good deal.

NW is so awesome in this regard. i can fly anywhere in Africa (morocco to capetown anybody?) for the same miles as JFK to DTW.

ANYWHERE in Africa?

I will likely be looking to fly TNR to JNB Nov. 30 or Dec. 1. Anyway I can do this on World Perk miles?

Whoo hoo and thanks. This is good to know. I will call it in as soon as the date is firm. What airline is it, I wonder?

I don't think you have an option on airlines for this route. Do report back if you find out differently on the phone, though!

It's definitely an expensive ticket, but if you do a 7-day stay you can usually get in the $600 range on Air Madagascar.

Kq

Must admit that I was very impressed with availability last Xmas from JNB-NBO in Y on KQ using NW miles. IIRC it was 12/16-12/26 and on their brand new 738s (only a couple of days in service). Best of all only 25Kmiles each ticket. Took all but 5 minutes on the phone to get my exact dates and flights (wanted the red-eye).

Yeah, AF does CDG-TNR...but that's not an option for an intra-Africa ticket.

I just took this trip two weeks ago (booked in Oct 2006). We were told that the reason our ticket had to be paper was because it included KQ segments, but perhaps it was because we had 13 or so segments.

Either way, good to hear e-tickets are possible on KQ. I will also say I was extremely satisfied with the availability on KQ. We got our 1st choice of dates on 4 different flights (AMS-NBO, NBO-SEZ-NBO, NBO-CDG), all in Premier World!
