Irritating SuperSize rules
 

Two months ago I flew NWA from Korea to LAX for three weeks of mid-tour leave and bought the $20 supersize deal thing for 1,000 miles on NWA.com. While I was in the states I did a ton of travelling, including trips from LAX to Santa Rosa and Seattle, flown on Alaska.

So I get back and the miles never posted. I wrote in and they responded that since "all segments of the trip" were not all flown on NWA metal, they couldn't give me the miles. I considered the roundtrip from ICN-LAX, which was all NWA to be the "trip" in question. And I don't get the deal I paid for because in the meantime I took a hop on a puddle jumper to Santa Rosa, a route which NWA doesn't serve?

I hate to quibble over 1,000 miles/$20, but if I'm going to pay $1,400 for a roundtrip trans-pacific flight on NWA (which was not the cheapest fare available and also constitutes 5% of my annual income ;)) then I don't think they should quibble with me about what I do in between.

It irritates me, but I still love NWA. And I'll always be loyal. :p

Please clairfy: were the puddle jumper and Alaska Airlines segments on the same itinerary or ticket as your NW flights across the pond?

No, I bought them totally separately. I completely understand why they wouldn't give them to me if they were the same itinerary. But when I wrote back and explained that fact, they sent back a form e-mail about where to send ticket stubs for uncredited miles, which has nothing to do with my original question.

SuperSize handling can be funky. I hope you kept a print of the original receipt and/or the emailed confirmation when you purchased the SuperSizer.

I'd suggest you send NW a copy of the itinerary -- clearly noting & numbering each segment. Then add a copy of your WP mileage postings with those segments highlighted and a copy of the SuperSizer receipt and/or confirmation.

The SuperSize rules are actually quite simple and reasonable. Take away the boiler plate and you're left with 2 rules: (1) you have to fly on NW or KL metal and (2) you have to buy the SuperSize before the trip.

"All flight segments within the paid roundtrip must be operated by Northwest, Northwest Airlink, Compass Airlines or KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to earn the SuperSize mileage credit"

So there's your problem. You bought the SuperSize mid-trip. You should have bought it before leaving Korea. The other trips you took were not on NW or KL metal so they don't count. I know this must be frustrating but you're only talking about $20, so no biggy. Besides, if you have another flight on NW or KL by the end of the year you can still get those miles.

Lesson learned, my friend: read the fine T&C carefully ;)

No, I definitely bought the supersize like a month before I bought the actual ticket. I bought it as soon as I knew I would be purchasing a ticket. I'm not dumb enough to think I could supersize after I had flown. :cool: I guess just dumb enough to think that I could do some other travelling in the meantime.

Nowhere does it say in his post that he bought the SuperSizer mid-trip.

If he did, yes, that's a problem.

My B. I got confuser by the proximity of "mid-tour" and "bought" and somehow understood that the SuperSize was bought mid-trip. :)

I have also had issues with SuperSize when I had one trip "inside" another. First it posted, then it disappeared, then another SuperSize from months before disappeared, etc. I wrote TTU and the problem was taken care of. Good luck!

Mid tour refers to a period of leave in the middle of a deployment for service members. Aaron20 must be in the Armed Forces stationed in Korea who returned home for leave.

Thank you for your service! As a thank you over the past several years, NWA offered to continued a deployed servicemember's elite status for the next year. If you earn elite status this year, be sure to send in your deployment paperwork to maintain your status for next year--provided they offer that deal again.

He didn't, there is one caveat... and this is proven by trial-and-error...

You have to buy SuperSize before your outbound posts.

I've bought a SuperSize the morning after a turn-around same-day MR. Flights flown on calendar day 1, SuperSize purchased on calendar day 2, flights and SuperSize posted on calendar day 3.
