Flying standby question

Can I check-in online today (trying to get an upgrade) and then go into the self-service check-in to see if I can standby for an earlier flight for my second segment tomorrow? (I fly tomorrow.)
Or how would I go about trying to get on an earlier second segment? I assume I can just go to the counter after my first flight and ask, but I'd like to get on the standby list earlier.

Any advice is appreciated.

I THINK you can check in now, then repeat again online later if you want to check for a standby option.

If you just want to get on the standby list, start check in, select Yes when it asks you if you want an upgrade, and cancel check-in if you don't get it. This will put you on the waitlist without being checked in.
