I am still not exactly sure what this piece of equipment is (or how someone would get into a position to be injured by it). Tugs & towbars that push aircraft are one (dangerous) thing, but does anyone have a photo of the type of equipment that did this?

The closest analogy I can think of to a "luggage elevator" is at San Jose Airport, where Northwest Airlines uses a forklift-like contraption to raise and lower wheelchairs from ground up to the aircraft door (they use outdoor mobile stars to do general boarding).

As of today, DAY still staffed by workers from other bases.

Everyone is devastated..

Not using Skybridges...be boarded from outside up the stairs.
