However, MSP residents are faced with >80% domination by NW and thus, assuming they care more about nonstops and variety of destinations, more people -- on a relative scale -- will be elite on NW than there are out of NYC.

While I don't disagree with you, I think your logic is slightly skewed. I think what psychtobe was also getting at was not the fact that MSP residents are more likely to be WP elites than say NYC residents (to your point, NYC residents can choose UA, AA, CO, etc.) but that MSP is a connection point for so many NW flights. You aren't competing with just the MSP elites, you are competing with most elites in the system because we have to connect via MSP. Naturally, your upgrade percentage is going to be lower than a non-hub elite because the non-hub elites have far fewer elites to compete against.

I've never understood this logic. Essentially EVERY NW flight is to/from a hub, where there are a 'ton' of elites. We are all competing against many elites.

Which hub makes a difference, though. In the past few years I don't think I've not received an upgrade flying thru MEM.

Wierd things going on with "F" Inventory

I had a trip this past Monday morning 30th DTW-> BWI (the first flt. of the day). I received no e-mail notification (like I usualy do) that EUA had run and that I was/was not upgraded.

Checked-in that morning at the kisok, and again no upgrade. Well, got to the gate and I was one of six BF upgrades. I suspect that NW is tweaking its "R" inventory as well as EUA.

new program

All,

the F fare theory was true - I know with my company NW has started something like AAIRPASS with us - if we book using what they call a BIZPASS through NW (shows up on our travel site) NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE IF THERE IS A SEAT IN F YOU GET IT. Does not matter if you are elite silver, platinum or gold - has no relevance. We get first class seats before all others (provided its not within the window for eua) BUT if there is a seat after eua runs - that is in the F bucket and not the R and say we book last minute - that seat is ours!

most of the year I was a silver - but going back and fourth to PDX and DFW from either DTW or MSP I RARELY missed an upgrade. I'm gold now so that will help personal travel but usually for business - i'm upgraded right when I purchase the ticket if there is a seat.

so I have been harassed, yelled at and questioned by many platinums at the gate who are nosy and look at my boarding pass, saw I was a lowly silver and questioned why I got upgraded.

But to that point, as a MSP resident, I don't have a choice but to fly my first outbound leg FROM MSP. Every time. As do all the other elites who are taking the 80+% dominated NW flights.

As a connecting passenger from elsewhere, you could presumably choose to go via MSP, DTW, MEM, or one of the other focus cities to your final destination, thus increasing your opportunities to select less elite-heavy routes if that's your goal.

Is DCA-MEM considered an elite heavy? Because I was first on the BF upgrade list as SE
