I've used the carpet at SEA and MSP. They've got the carpets at IND, but because of the way the gates are set up (i.e., there's room for only one boarding lane, with the jetway door between a wall and the podium, and a BP scanner on the side of the podium), they seem unusable there.

In the TTU, you can suggest that every time the red carpet is not used for Elite boarding, Elites will be awarded 1000 bonus miles, ala the Plat Elite guaranteed first class domestic upgrade.

Well, I agree and have posted the same before. I have NEVER seen 2 lines form on a domestic flight. I have used the elite line, but it was with the rest of the flight. Great idea, but horrible execution -- in the end a huge waste of money and a cause for frustration for those they trying to take care of.

Generally the problem with the 'Elite' Carpets is the space or where they are use. For example, at DCA the layout or the design of the gate area does not work well for the Eite Carpets.

You should send a note. You described EXACTLY what the carpet is supposed to be for. There are still some people who line up there for elite and FC boarding. That is NOT what it is intended for. It makes no sense to make the GA reach over to the elite line when FC and Elite are THE ONLY FOLKS BOARDING! If you are being called as a FC or elite passenger then you should go to the GA, not the elite carpet. After the general call THEN the carpet makes sense to get you on in front of the non-elite flyers. I roll my eyes when I see people in line on the carpet before they call FC boarding and then I walk right up to the GA and cut them all. What are people thinking? There is no need for a carpet if you are the only people boarding. I bet some of the "attitude" is because the GA's see what I described and think to themselves that these guys must really need attention to actually line up 4 feet further from the scanner just because it says "elite" on the carppet. You should send a note because as The Zipper says, they can’t fix it if you do not tell them about it.

same thing happened to me in DTW - came to board after general boarding had started - the Elite lane was clearly closed off and saw somebody else being sent to the back of the line so I just went to the back too.

It seems the only real need for the carpet would be for elites who arrive at the gate after general boarding has started. How much of a need this is - I have no idea!

We'll have to wait for the NWA DO to find that one out... ;)

I had heard about the addition of the carpets, and so when I saw the carpet in the middle of regular boarding I headed over to it. I was first abused by those in line, (well ok no biggie, it is a new policy) what shocked me was I was then abused by the GA and told to get in line. I asked her what the elite carpet was for, and she rolled her eyes. I have noticed that NW employees seem very good at the eye roll.. CO employees have other ways of being dismissive, but I have never seen one do the full roll. I just shut up and got in line.
Then on a later connection they just ran everyone over the grey carpet, at that point I rolled my eyes. Did NW just miss the boat on the training of the change, or do NW employees just not care? It really is a nice perk when it works right, but done in a half a$$ manner just means NW bought a bunch of gray carpets. I've never actually seen a GA use the elite line/carpet the way it was intended. Each time I've tried to use it, I've been fussed at by the GA and told to get in the regular line. Oh, yes, I've seen the eye roll, too. It's looks like its a failed "perk" because the staff will not use it. |
Yeah so CO has branded and marketed EliteAccess well in my opinion. They created something really out of nothing for "extra" value for elites and those that buy full fare or FC/Biz class tickets. NW tried to copy the idea and well, really poorly marketed it. In fact they didn't even market it, since you don't see that on nwa.com, there isn't a "worldExpress Lane" brand to it and obviously didn't sell it to the very important GA well to see the value this could be to the bottom line and their hopefully better pay if NW does well....

[edit] I've looked through the '06 Benefits Guide pdf, nwa.com, and google, but can't find "official" reference to this benefit. Does anyone have a link? Thanks! Steve B. |
