A few weeks ago, a received a true battlefield upgrade, where the FA handed me a FC boarding pass while seated in coach just before the door closed. The fellow next to me said he was upgraded via OLCI around 23:59 before flight departure as a Silver! He said he paid about $400 for the ticket, so he couldn't have been on a fare class much higher than mine (K fare). I tried OLCI around 23:30 before flight departure and was told I was on the waitlist. This supports what themicah suggests happens with R inventory.

Actually, based on this thread, it sounds like the other plats on the wait list were there when EUA ran at the 5/3/1 day window and they couldn't be upgraded. You might have shot to the #1 spot because you bought your ticket earlier than they did.

That's what I'm gathering from this thread at least. It didn't have anything to do with those plats checking in before you.
