WorldClub Wireless now requires an access code

The wireless in the MSP C WorldClub now requires an access code that is displayed at the front desk. Therefore if you planned on sitting outside of the WC and "borrowing" the free wireless, that might not work anymore. This is probably a good thing for people who do have WC access as I know I have experienced extremely slow speeds due to a large number of users before, and this should clear some of that up.

If anyone knows if this is isolated to this location or is being implemented everywhere, please comment.

I have not seen it anywhere else yet. I always have problems at the mem club.

I have never been able to get NW's WC wireless to work with my laptop. Almost everywhere else I have no problems, including CO PC.

I seriously doubt this will make the speed significantly faster. I have only seen one or two people at most outside a club trying to use the internet.

Passed through there wednesday and it wasn't required. Sure it wasn't just giving the SSID?

It seems to be a change. I just got a report from someone at the club that they now have an access code for WiFi.

100%. Instead of being presented with the page asking you to agree to the terms and conditions before being granted access, you are asked for an access code. I walked to the front desk to ask them what it was and there was a sign displaying it. The MEM club does not require a code, and still doesn't even ask you to agree to any terms and conditions.

I think it's a good move. The less folks on the network the faster and hopefully a bit more secure...

I was in the terminal C WC a couple of weeks ago and was asked to agree to terms of service but no access code was required.

Quite honestly I think this is very reasonable. Post an access code that changes every so often at the front desk. I often see peopl sitting near the doors of the NW WC, CO PC, UA RCC, DL CR, etc. scarfing the free wi-fi.

Unless the data is being encrypted with WEP/WPA, it's still unsecure. A code for access to the WiFi is not the same as encrypting the data. It's no problem to sit outside the WC and simply capture packets.

Of course, those in the know would just try to access the WC, be denied, then leave but not before looking at the access code.

Excellent.

I was in C earlier. The desk agents said this was the first day of the access code. She said the code will change later, meaning later after they try it out and confirm that it works, I guess.

I found a spot in DTW with FREE Wifi via some unknown Linksys router. It hasn't disappeared yet, and I have been using it for a few months.

As well as the code de jour, unless the page to enter the code is SSL and the connection is encrypted with WPA/WEP (highly unlikely).

Just another nuisance, I guess. Perhaps Concourse Communications (who provides the WiFi to the WorldClub) was complaining because people were leeching. It doesn't seem like an initiative the WorldClub would take on its own.

If you're broadcasting passwords and the like you're a fool to rely solely on WEP/WPA for protection.

I have "scarfed" the wi-fi outside the DL clubs at SEA and BNA, but this is because I'm a T-Mobile subscriber and pay for it, not because I'm getting it for free. OTOH, if the wireless access is truly free inside the club, it is reasonable to require an access code that only those inside the club (presumably, members) can acquire.
