Northwest to Fly Grand Rapids (GRR) - New York (LGA) Nonstop

Largest U.S. city to become Northwest's newest nonstop destination from Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northwest Airlines today announced that it will begin offering its first nonstop service between Grand Rapids' Gerald R. Ford International Airport and New York's LaGuardia Airport, beginning Nov. 1, 2006.

"Our large and loyal customer base in Grand Rapids will now have a nonstop option to New York on Northwest, enabling them to earn WorldPerks frequent flyer miles," said Phil Haan, executive vice president of international, alliances and information technology at Northwest Airlines and chairman of NWA Cargo.

"Northwest's comprehensive network, convenient and reliable schedules, competitive fares and hassle-free hub airports have made us the leading choice of travelers in Grand Rapids, the state of Michigan and throughout the Heartland of America," Haan added.

The new flight will be operated by Northwest Airlink partner Pinnacle Airlines with a 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ).

I guess the question is why? is there that much O/D traffic between these two cities that it requires a direct vs a one stop in DTW. Thats ~2 hrs in a CRJ...

They may have noticed the success of AA's daily flight (began 6/9) or are using a dormant slot before it expires.

I am sure they have good o/d traffic and they win two ways: 1) GRR folks get a non-stop alternative who would complan about that even in a crj and 2) now they have more seats into LGA for connectors which they won't have any problem filling as LGA and NYC in general is a busy business market.

NW's times seem reasonable for O&D travelers, especially for travelers in West Michigan who may not want to wake up at 4 a.m. to make a 6:30 a.m. departure. Also, for NW travellers, it will probably cut a couple hours off travel time each way vs. a connection in DTW (land, taxi, deplane, tram/walkway/tunnel to connecting gate, wait, board, taxi, takeoff), plus eliminates the possibility of misconnecting and greatly reduces the likelihood of lost/delayed luggage on that business trip to NYC.

That's about average for CRJ flights. Perhaps they're just establishing the market with whatever they have available (DC9s aren't going to be brought out from the desert for this run) and when they get their new fangled CRJ-900s or EMB-175s, it will seem like a nice upgrade.

Actually a 10Am arrival at LGA not really business freindly beacuse ite mans you can't really make a meeting before 11am likewise a 5:35pm departure back beacuse that means a meeting would need to end by 3pm or so. Doesn't seem to be geared twoard someone who wants to make a one-day no overnight trip. AA schedule much more business friendly.

I agree I do not think the schedule is that great. I am willing to bet the route is built around having anb extra aircraft. Delta has been doing this a lot in BNA with CRJ flights to a couple of places.
