3rd bag = $80

According to local news reports, NWA will once again charge $80 to check a 3rd bag starting Monday!

I had over $700. in excess baggage fees when I sent 7 bags to MEX

This spring I had to send several "excess" bags to MEX for business. The 4th, 5th, and additional bags got more expensive. It is a progressive excess baggage fee. If you can possibly avoid it, do not every send 7 checked bags. It gets very, very expensive.

Is this really a big deal? It's been that way for a while. We knew this wasn't going to last. They gave people over a week to get used tothe new guidelines.

I don't think liquids and gels will cause most people to check an extra bags than they normally woudl have if those items hadn't been banned.

Is this also for transatlantic flights? Can the third bag also be the same weight & dimensions as the first two? I have lots of stuff I need to transport soon and this sounds like a good deal.

This is an excellent way for NW to generate additional revenue as it emerges from bankrupcy! I see no problem with it at all. Those who transport more should pay more. What's wrong with that?

I have to agree here, if you check that many bags then you should pay more. I do know, because it's impacting me, that the new security requirements are causing people to check more. That's a fact. However NW, and other airlines, need to step up to the plate and do a much better job of getting bags off the plane to baggage claim. Last week my RT to Phoenix with checked bags resulted in a 45 minute wait in both directions as I waited in baggage claim, and my bags were tagged priority since I was in FC. Friday night in to Tampa 200+ people stood in baggage claim for 45 minutes after arrival before any bags even began to come out. That's got to be rectified.

I inquired about this once for TYS-VIE when I was helping a friend of mine to move back some of the stuff he purchased here. The 3rd and 4th <50lb bags were for $120 each. Then out of curiosity I asked about the 5th and 6th bag cost. It was $300+ for each.

Exactly. And those who don't will eventually figure out that their shoes, etc., need to go in the carryon and not checked luggage to compensate for the additional weight of shampoo, toothpaste, etc. It's not like their packing extra. They just need to rearrange what goes where.
