Not to mention violating the fare rules. You can't route JFK-MSP-DTW without roughly doubling the fare.

.

Dave,
I've never heard of a first class upgrade being offered for $50. What's your source?

The $50 would buy you:
- Early boarding
- Quick deplaning
- About 4 more inches of pitch and 2.5" of width
- Guaranteed window or aisle
- Complimentary alcohol and probably a salty snack in a shiny package
- Pre-board beverage (most likely, depending on time)
- Use of the 1st class lavatory
- Personalized service from the 1st class FA
- Less competition for overhead bin space
- That "feel good" feeling of avoiding the riff-raff in coach

For a short DTW-JFK flight, you'd need to decide if it's worth it for you.
If you've never flown in 1st before, and $50 isn't an issue, then heck, go for it (just keep your expectations relatively low).

Great post, thanks.

Am I correct to understand that the upgrades on this route will cost $50 per flight?

Are there any class restrictions, as well? I don't know what class I'm going to be booked in yet. :)

There is no way to know how much an e-first upgrade will cost, or whether it will be offered at all.

So the earliest I will know is the day of my flight? :(

You might be offered an upgrade at online checkin the day before.

But I wouldn't count on it.

Don't get your hopes too high, as this is far from a given. Domestic upgrades for $$ at check-in are not that common.

If you post your date/flights, we can at least let you know what the current loads look like.
