Gold Question
 
This is so bizarre...I just realized that I have never flown NW at all with someone else since becoming Gold three years ago. I am on 649 tonight DTW - ORD....short little flight, and F seems to be wide-open. Will we both be automatically upgraded at the airport (are we on a list), or do I need to see someone at the World Club/Gate to upgrade? Just curious. Thanks for the help.

You don't offer enough info!
If you checkin online it may offer to upgrade you then.
If your companion is an elite then also on line.
Otherwise ask at the gate checkin or definitely at the WBC.
If you can check in online now and call the Gold elite line if your companion is not elite

I was under the impression that Golds (not Plats) were entitled to Companion Upgrades at the airport only.

Unlimited Airport Standby Companion Upgrade
Platinum Elite and Gold Elite members may upgrade one companion from any
paid fare (full or discount) at the airport only within two hours of departure on a
Northwest- or Continental-operated flight. No advance confirmation is available.
Companions traveling on WorldPerks Award Tickets, Continental Reward Tickets
and certain companion fares are not eligible for First Class upgrades.You are
encouraged to check with Reservations to determine which companion fares are
eligible for First Class upgrades. Please present your Elite membership card and
photo identification at the airport to request the companion upgrade.
Companion upgrades are available for travel in the same travel regions as
WorldPerks Elite upgrades (see page 6).

You're correct -- Plats are the only ones who can upgrade a companion in advance IF in the same reservation. Golds must get upgraded themselves, then when at the airport, request that their companion be put on the FC standby list. If FC is wide open, sometimes the GA will give a FC card to the companion on the spot. Otherwise, companion upgrades are processed at the gate just before (or sometimes during) boarding.

Companion Upgrade from W Class?
 
I'm NW Gold Elite.

I have a K class ticket, my wife and daughter have W - (worldperks) award tickets. I'm on a second record from MSP to DCA in July. Provided there is an F class seat available, any chance I can companion upgrade my wife or daughter at the gate? Is this completely up to the GA for an award ticket?

Yes, it's completely under the discression of the agent to upgrade your companions on WP tickets. Be nice and smile.

I used the companion upgrade for Gold's for the first time last week and was able to do it at the Worldclub
