Understanding The Middle Seat

DCA-MSP Tuesday afternoon, full flight. In the last row of coach, guy who has 26B sits in 26C. When 26C arrives, 26B says, "you don't mind trading seats, do you?" To which 26C says, "yes, I mind, that's why I picked this seat. If I wanted a middle I would have stayed up in row 10."

OK, I know this isn't much of a story, but it's all I got tonight. My well is dry.

Don't feel bad. It's the best story in this entire thread.

I am pondering your story as I enjoy my bag of Spinzels from Sunday's MSP to SEA flight. Hmm... is this true? If so, wow... I don't know who 26B was, but I would say they were a tad bit out of touch with reality.

That's funny...who (flying solo) would give up a window/aisle for a middle?

I wouldn't mind if people sitting on A & C are both good looking and I want to hook up with either one of them. :D

Funny you should mention this......

Last week (a DCA-MSP A319 flight), a young man sitting in the back row, window seat calls the flight attendant over and asks if she can find him a middle seat somewhere. She about doubles over in dis-belief and reconfirms that he would like to be moved from a window to a middle seat. Yes, is the answer, and she goes in search of a middle seat for him. She found one, and he happily goes to his new home....squished between the person in A and the one in C.

F/As are all in the back of the plane sharing their "You won't believe...." story.

You know, I once jokingly asked a ticket agent if anyone actually ever asks for a middle seat. She said yes and her theory was that perhaps for someone with a fear of flying, it gives them a bit more security to be sandwiched between two people. I remember thinking that's what whiskey and vicodin are for. :)

When travelling in British Airways in J, I love the 2 middle seats (on the 777/747) as they are both rear facing and you dont feel "sandwiched" or clostraphobic at all

Good point. Those seats are a lot like seat 21B on a NW DC9-30.

Just last week I did give up a "window" seat for a middle seat. I was going DFW-DTW-LAX. I was coming in from another trip and my flight to DFW arrived after the flight I was booked on DFW-DTW had already departed. I went standby on the DFW-MEM-LAX later flight. The earlier dfw-MEM flight was delayed so when I arrived at the gate I asked about getting onto it. The gladly booked me on it, but to my dismay upon entering I was in 21A (I think) on a DC-9. The very back row, "window" seat that does not recline and you can not look out the window since the engine is in front of the window. What a change, my first time in coach in a few months and I get the absolute worse seat on the bus.

As the doors were closing a FA came back to tell the FA in the back that the middle seat in the Exit Row was open. I "volunteered" very quickly to switch to a middle seat!! Of course in this scenario the middle seat was much more pleasant than being squashed in the back row between the engine and the man in the aisle seat.
