NW has allowed Elites to check in 3 x 70 domestically.

Exactly. I have never waited less than 30 minutes for bags at any airport in recent memory. So I never check bags. I enjoy strolling past the folks standing at the carousel and gettign the first rental car shuttle or other ground transportation before the crowd.

I will generally carry on on the outbound for a business trip, but check my bag on the way home... Only problem I have had W/NW was during the blackout last year.

Yesterday my bag was the first one off the belt, and it is usually within the first 5-10 bags off. Remember if you score the upgrade to make sure they tag your bag with the "Priority" tag. They do seem to work well.

That might be a NorthWest rule, but it is certainly not a SkyTeam policy or federal law.

It is ok for your bags not to go with you if it was because the airline misplaced them, or they couldn't make it over in time on a tight connection. The logic behind this (don't ask) is that in theory you would have been ok to travel with your bags. But, so the theory goes for international rules, you cannot knowingly arrange for your bags go one one international flight whilst you travel on another. There has to be a 100% match with bags on board with pax on board unless it is a bag that is being expidited due to an airline mistake.

Maybe in your case the airline screwed up, hence why your bags never showed up, but unfortunately you can't voluntarily switch to an eariler or different flight if the airline can't get your bag over to that flight with you for security reasons.

According to http://www.nwa.com/travel/tips/baggage.html, the baggage allowances are:

Domestic Y: 2 x 50lbs
Domestic FC: 3 x 50lbs
Int'l Y: 2 x 70lbs
Int'l WBC: 3 x 50lbs

According to http://www.nwa.com/freqfly/elite/benefits.html, elites are allowed up to 70lbs per bag dometic or int'l.

So apparently elites can only bring 3 x 70lbs when travelling in FC/WBC, not when travelling in Y.
