Arrow How do I upgrade to Business Class when flying Coach on an Award

I will be flying to Rome in July on an award ticket. I want to upgrade my Wife and I to Bsiness Class for the trip? What is the best way to do it?

Waitlist for 'D' class on the same flights. Check the day before to see if the waitlist has cleared. If so... arrange for the extra miles to be taken from your account.

If not flying on NW metal you are SOL

With great respect, evarevice, I don't think it's reasonable to expect a courtesy upgrade to business on a coach award ticket... business class awards are clearly available, albeit for an exorbitant amount of additional miles, but still, that's what you should be prepared to kick in.

Only once have I been upgraded gratis on an international award, and that was on a Canada-US flight, and due to a glitch in the NW check-in kiosk (it didn't know the difference between a CO OnePass award ticket and a revenue ticket). I never ask.

I agree availability in July will be brutal.

I wouldn't be so sure. My experience last summer was that close to departure D seats tended to appear quite often to AMS.

AMS is a little easier ticket than FCO -- there's a lot more lift to AMS from more US gateways.
