Just wondering what is the Asematunneli complex?

It seems it is the only place that is open on Sunday?

Also what can you do on Sunday? I have a whole day before the night flight back.

Asematunneli is a basically an underground mall below the Railway Station with shops and a few fast food places.
Have you already looked at http://www.hel2.fi/tourism/en/matko.asp to get some ideas for Sunday sightseeing?

I wouldn't plan on shopping as most shops will be shut on Sundays now until closer to Christmas when they are allowed by law to trade again on Sundays.

ps. give Asematunneli a miss

Ok, then. Here some suggestions:

Friday: Lunch at Slussen or Tori near Fredrikintori square in southern Helsinki. Both serve slightly upscale Finnish comfort food with a crowd of media people, artists and models among others.

Afterwards, the surrounding streets offer a good glimpse in contemporary Finnish design and fashion offerings. Annankatu, Fredrikinkatu and Uudenmaankatu streets are especially full of small shops.

For a Friday evening aperitif, head to the Atelje Bar on top of the Hotel Torni. Dinner could be Lebanese with a family taste at Farouge (owned by two Lebanese sisters and a Finnish gent), creative cooking at Demo (Michelin star, the two young owners both also have working stints in Hongkong) or refined modern Scandinavian at Savoy (elegant, somewhat snobbish but always delivers)

Later, Mecca or the Kamp Club could keep you occupied until the wee hours in an international crowd.

Saturday: Revival from the previous night could start at your room/hotel sauna or maybe at the Helsinki Day Spa (http://www.dayspa.fi/index.php?lang=eng)

The Stockmann department store and neigbouring Academic Bookstore can easily keep one occupied until dinner time. No need to head out to eat either as the top floor restaurant at Stockmann has a wide selection of modern light dishes and the first floor coffee shop at the bookstore has even made it into a Japanese wildly succesful art film.

For dinner in a romantic, byzantine atmosphere, even with the requisite Orthodox Cathedral next door, the Bellevue Russian restaurant has few contenders.

For a Saturday night entertainment spot, I'd suggest two gay/mixed venues: The DTM club/bar on Iso Robertinkatu is supposed to be a hassle free and fun place for a night out for everyone, while around the corner Lost & Found gathers Helsinkians and guests of all persuasions until the early morning hours.

Sunday: is a rather quiet day in Helsinki. So, after hotel breakfast/brunch you could have a round of swimming & sauna at the central and classical Yrjonkatu pool open from noon. Sunday is ladies day.

Then, a leisurely walk away, the oldest (Viennoise style) cafe in Helsinki, Cafe Ekberg offers afternoon tea/coffee and cakes with an experience of 155 years.

Or for more savoury options, a 15-20 minute taxi ride to another classic eatery, Lehtovaara (http://www.lehtovaararavintola.fi/english/home.html), brings you a Scandinavian delicacy buffet, a hot entree and various desserts for under 30 euros. Sunday buffet lunch from noon to 4 p.m.

As mentioned before, HEL has a very nice Stockmann shop and a few others but not a really good restaurant or bar. With OW status, the Silver Wings lounge would be my choice because of the panorama windows.
