Is it possible to do NIAN from Bergen in just two days? (something like arriving in BGO Friday at noon and leaving Monday morning).

No problem. It can easily be done in a single day ... you're all set if you do it on Saturday.

Great, thanks. Would you recommend overnighting somewhere else than Bergen and split it into two days though?

I did it as a day trip from Bergen and would recommend it. If I had had more time, I would've loved to have stayed in some of the areas you pass thru during the tour, but it wasn't possible that trip and Bergen was great as a launch point.

jkzahn:

Sorry but I can't comment on the prices you quoted. My NIAN tour was part of a full-package deal that included air, some meals, lodging, time in Oslo,
etc. and I was traveling with a big group. I'm not sure exactly what the NIAN costs were. But I can tell you that you are in for a real treat! I didn't get to go
all the way to Bergen. BTW, the weather was not at all good during that portion of our trip. Let me just say, be prepared to dress for the weather and you'll enjoy the day (and the sites!) regardless of the snow, sun or rain!
Have a good trip!

If you buy the tour, can you still upgrade to the better seats?

I am targeting Sep 2 (Sunday) to go one way from Oslo to Bergen.

Far as I can tell, this consists of:
  • Oslo to Bergen train - 750kr (get off at Myrdal)
  • Scenic train from Myrdal to Flam - 100kr
  • Cruise from Flam to Gudvangen - 200kr (**seems there is an option for a Sognefjord Express Boat from Flam to Bergen too**)
  • Bus from Gudvangen to Voss - 100kr
  • Re-catch the Oslo to Bergen train in Voss and stay on until Bergen

So, individually this appears to be about 1150 NOK (appx $192) while Fjourd Tours is selling for 1165 NOK (appx $195).

Are those individual prices about right?
Anyone recommend taking the express boat from Flam instead of doing the bus/ train?

Thanks!!

I'm considering doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour individually as well. I was wondering where you got the information about the cost of the Flam-Gudvangen cruise and the Gudvangen-Voss bus from? I can find the train information from www.nsb.no, but just not sure where to find out about the cruise and the bus.

Thanks!

I got the prices from a 2004 Rick Steves book that I purchased for $1.00 (it is obviously now a little out of date).

I also can see that I mis-calculated the price for the train from Oslo. According to the site now, you can buy a one way "minpris" for 199 or 299 (availability) or "ordinaer" for 728. Supplement to First Clas is 75. (All prices NOK).

There are some rules about having to take direct routing for "minipris" in the Terms & Conditions. Does anyone think a minipris ticket would work for NIN? (Get off in Myrdal, Get on later in Voss to Bergen)

Thanks!!

IIRC, when I bought the ticket from bergen to oslo (minipris/sale as well), I was assigned a seat. As such, I find it doubtful that you could get off and on as you want with the train.

All these prices I just confirmed for this season:

So, total is 832 NOK (approximately $146 each with today's USD exchange).

If we had bought the package, it was going to be 1165 NOK (appx $203.50 each).

Don't know if the savings will be worth the trouble, but we shall see!!!

Ahhhh! You're going to have a great day!

Don't forget to have the camera fully charged. The scenery is stunning!

Just bring a mackintosh plus a pair of wellingtons and you'll be fine in Bergen.

Thanks for posting. I'm in the initial research stages of trying to figure out where we are going to go in Norway and how to get there.

We stocked up on beer and food in Germany the day of our flight to Norway and had dinner that way in the hotel.

A beer in a grocery store in Norway is $5. In Germany less than $1.
