Restaurants in Oslo

Hi !

Oslo is filled up with very good restaurants. An excellent online guide is found in a couple of newspaper web sites. They do weekly checks on restaurants anonymously and publish findings on Saturdays.

Dagbladet has this page : http://www.dagbladet.no/magasinet/robinson/
It's in Norwegian but you should be able to count the no. stars given..

The second one is Norway's financial paper, Dagens Næringsliv :
http://www.dn.no/guider/restaurantguiden/?WT.svl=meny
also in Norwegian but the top 10 restaurants are shown at the top.
Bagatelle and Statholdergaarden I believe has one or two Guide Michelin stars.
Both Chefs has at some time won gold medal in the Bocuse d'Or which is the world championship for chefs. Prices are of course thereafter.

Be aware, a couple of the restaurants listed may not be located in Oslo.

My choice, with unlimited funding, would be :

1. Bagatelle
2. Statholdergaarden
2. Brasserie France
3. Mares (seafood)

Great, thank you. Would anyone be able to suggest any moderately priced dinner places or some good quick lunch places?

perwei Feb 11, 2007 5:37 pm

Ok, ok, I thought you said all price ranges... ;-)
Moderately priced diner places :
- Brasserie France ( starters from $14, main from $35 )
- SüdØst
- Oslo Spiseforretning
- Markveien Mat og Vinhus
- D/S Louise
- Dinner

Take a look at this list : http://www.dn.no/guider/restaurantgu...e_reverse=true

For lunch I'd suggest one of the classics like
- Theatercafeen (if you can get a table..) but any of the others will probably be an excellent pick.

I enjoy the tapas at Delicatessen. Also try Villa Paradiso next door for pizza. Lots of restaurants in the Grunerløkka neighbourhood.

Oslo has good restaurants.

Some rambling notes from memory:

There is an excellent pizza place a few blocks from the palace called Pizza da Mimmo. It has just a few tables, so reservations are strongly recommended.

On the more expensive end, there is a Spanish restaurant across from the Radisson SAS Scandanavia, La Sangria I think it's called?

Aker Brygge has a number of restaurants, but they are on the pricier end. I can't recall any by name, but have always had good meals in the area.

Good luck!

Here are some of my favourites

Palace Grill on Solli Plass is a very nice restaurant in Oslo for the special occasion. 9 courses are around USD 100. http://www.palacegrill.no/ No reservations and very limited seating. Please arrive no later than 1800.

An everyday place with USD 10-15 meals I would recommend is Restaurant Schrøder, great place, I eat there a lot: http://www.spisekartet.no/restauranter/id/1671.lasso

Good Chinese food down town is Restaurant Oriental, located meters from Karl Johan. It's a PF Changs type of place with spicy, upscale oriental food. http://www.oriental.no/oriental.htm

Good Italian also downtown Oslo is Santinos http://interaktiv.vg.no/restaurantgu...title=Santinos. Probably the best Italian in town, but not very pricey.

I would also recommend Pizza Da Mimmo, best pizza in town.

Stay away from Sydøst.. Food there is overpriced and not good at all... I went there twice for birthday celebrations the last year.. Kaboom..

My Oslo favorite - though pretty expensive - are Vitis Vinifera at Sjolyst - "business downtown" where the consulting firms etc are.

Madserud Gard is in the same area (obviously this is where my OSL residence is..) and I like it a lot. Expensive, and the service varies...

If I go out with guests new to Norway, I would take them to Babette’s Guesthouse - where they serve Norwegian-French gourmet food. Very traditional though and again - EXPENSIVE...

If you want to try some different Chinese food, I suggest you visit Dinner Restaurant. Located next to the National Theatre, this restaurant serves the best Szechuan gourmet food in Oslo. It's rather expensive, but the food is amazing.

If you're on a budget, you may want to try the famous kebab at Bislett Kebab House. Here you'll get a huge kebab and a big coke for only 50 NOK. The place is always crowded which is a good sign, specially when we're talking about a kebab restauraunt. You'll even see celebrities and paramedics here. :)

If you want cheap food in Norway I would suggest looking in the "little Vietnam" area. It between Storgata, Møllergata and north of Stortorvet. Lots of places with south-east asian food for around 10-15USD for a main course. Not exactly Michelin star quality but many of them are good.

I would rate Restaurant Oriental as better than Dinner.

Bislett Kebab House is a legend for sure ^ ^

Well, Dinner is supposed to be more up-scale Chinese - and I think it's a great place. I actually think I ate my last dinner in Norway at Dinner, and that's the one I would prefer, rather than Oriental.

EDIT: And the service has been outstanding when I've been there. :)

AFIK, Dinner is the only restaurant serving Szechuan food in Oslo - while all the other serve from the Cantonese kitchen, which is just the "regular stuff" you'll find all over the world.
