CPH to the City

Ill be in town for 15 hrs, we cashed in 10,000 pts for a room at The Scandic Copenhagen in order to shower and get a couple of hours nap.

Has anyone taken a bus to the city? how long does it take and what does it cost?

Is the train a better deal and how much will that be? I heard 66 dk for a round-trip anyone know if theres a deal if you do it the same day ?

Any info would be most appreciated.

I took a bus some years ago - I have a vague recollection that it may have been marginally cheaper than the train but I don't think there was a lot in it.

Last time I was there I took the train, and like you I was staying at the Scandic. It's a good ten minute walk from the station - quote do-able with a small amount of luggage but not if you're carrying a lot.

THANKS, I guess then Train it will be.

when Im in London I stay up near Hendon, I used to always buy a TC 1-4 and take the Tube. For the past 3 years Ive been taking the bus, I go to Golders Green Station and catch the 13 into town, Still the old RoadMasters Buses. I love being able to look out and see the place. The tube would take only alittle less time. This way its I think now 3 gbp for a day pass on the buses, less than a TC 1-4 and for me at least alot more Enjoyable.

So I thought with a bus we'd be able to see more of the city. and save alittle at the sametime, when at CPH.

Can I get by using my US issued CC, since its 1 day in CPH, that night in Gothenburg then driving to Zuerich, Id hate to constantly have to change into local currency and have it left over. I know that a CC will run me an extra 2-3 % on fees but it would more than offset having Local currency left over. Maybe Ill fine a Machine that gives Euros but same problem. Into CPH on 8/1 out of Zuerich on 8/4

At CPH airport you can buy the train tickets with your credit card (and same at the train station). I've gone a few days in CPH without handling any physical Danish crowns (or fractions thereof) without finding it a major headache. Even McDonalds will take credit cards (or debit cards???).

Thanks it helps alot, Does Denmark & Sweden use the Euro? and can I get them at an ATM? maybe that might not be such a bad idea as Imsure Germany and Switzerland use the Euro, and this way when I leave ZRH I can give the Hotel any left over and use my CC for the remainder of the bill or hold on to them as Ill be back in ZRH for 2 days in Sept

No , and neither does Switzerland ! But Germany uses the Euro. But that said, you will be able to use the euro to pay with in a number of places, but the exchange money will be in Danish kroner.

Its the same price whether use bus or train to the city, but the most convenient for you will probably be the train. But the double dekker 250S express bus that goes by the main station is not too bad either - it offers a bit of sightseeing on the way as well. Current price is 25.5 kr . (That about 3.5 €)

Thanks, maybe we'll do the bus in and the train back to the airport. We're be using the Scandic Copenhagen as a day room. Will that 250S get us close by?

Thanks for that link others provided it also but when I looked at "The Bus" I couldnt make out which if any went to where I wanted to go. Thanks for mentioning the 250S, at least now Ill know what to look for. Can I use my US Credit Card to buy bus tkts? and where?

GK Jul 21, 2005 2:43 am

the most pleasant part of CPH is the Stroget street in the city centre, which is pedestrianised, so you'll actually have to get of the bus to enjoy that..

If visiting Tivoli, paying in euro is accepted with getting change back in Danish money. But maybe the exchange rate is not so good.

Sweden uses Swedish money and Denmark uses its own money. Euro is not accepted at most places. Changing at expensive airport or train station FOREX works.

If you buy the ticket with a credit card, you should purchase the tickets from the railways desk. You get off the bus at the Main Station next to Tivoli.
From there its probably a 10 min walk or so to the Copenhagen Scandic.

GUWonder Jul 23, 2005 12:55 pm

Keep in mind the option of the Copenhagen Card (which can be bought with a credit card):

In the Greater Copenhagen area you can transfer freely between buses, Metro, trains and the yellow "harbour bus" using the same tickets and discount cards.

Ordinary basic tickets can be purchased from vending machines at stations, ticket offices and on buses from the driver.

Alternatively you can purchase a Copenhagen Card which is valid for any travel in the Greater Copenhagen area. There are two types: valid 24 hours or valid 72 hours.

It seems like the Hilton Copenhagen Airport hotel sells the Copenhagen Card. It's right outside the airport building (walkable); just follow the sign or ask someone. (When exiting "baggage claim", go straight ahead and slightly to the right, past the DSB/train ticket sales booth, and then exit the doors on the right at the end of the airport building. The Hilton is just outside.)

Thanks when I checked on one of the links you provided it seems that a 24 hr CCard is 210 Dkk while the train r/t will be say 55 dkk, since we plan to walk around and maybe go to Tivoli its probably best to pay as we go this time. Since the ScandicCPH is very well located we wont need any inner transport other than our feet.

That sounds about right with the 24-hour version going for some 28-29 euros.

Keep in mind some Danish businesses will either charge extra for using a credit card (3 to 5% usually) or give a discount for cash - we saw this detail on the menu of 7 or 8 different restaurants in Copenhagen, and in a couple independent shops. Depending on your bank's fees, it might be worthwhile to get $75 from an ATM in Danish currency - buses, Tivoli, meals could easily total that for a day.

Thanks for the info. However since we both eat only special foods we wont be hitting any restaurants. Our hotel is free, so our expenses will be transport to/from the airport (doing a r/t the same day), Tivloi and water (which we can probably get a few bottles off the plane at that. Its gonna be basically a walking around to just see the place.

Special foods?

As one who lives on a strict gluten-free diet, and has a child with multiple foods allergies, may I ask what you eat? I'm always interested in how others with special dietary needs handle them while traveling.

You can purchase the Copenhagen Card at the hotel services desk in Terminal 3. Once you leave bagage claim and costums, its at the left side of the terminal.

Thanks for that useful info. Going to the Hilton and buying it there seemed like going outside unnecessarily.

Does anybody know the price for a cab from the airport to city center?
Husband has to go there soon for business and I'll join him, since I have never visited Copenhagen.

This practice is in fact not legal anymore . Taxis would also add a 2% extra charge if you paid by creditcard, to cover the commision . But from July 1st this year there has been a change in consumer law, that does not allow businesses to add this extra charge.

Should be somewhere around 180 - 200 kr. (30-35$ or 24-27€).

That's great news and should help offset charges for those whose US credit cards seem to have hiked their charges for international use as of late.

CPH and CPH transport seems to have become even more tourist friendly as of late; for CPH airport to Malmo, paying (cash) on the train no longer results in an on-board ticket purchase surcharge. Is the same true for CPH airport to downtown?

I don´t think so - in fact you might end up with a fine of 500kr for not having a valid ticket ! At least thats how it works elsewhere on the metro transportation system.

Thanks for the warning. Sweden is a little friendlier on the trains with just a surcharge. CPH to Malmo thankfully got rid of even that surcharge on the trains. (The metro/subway in Stockholm is a different thing. )

Glad to hear that surcharge has been banned. Copenhagen was the only place I've seen it on restaurant menus, although I have seen it on hotel info in other countries (I believe it was Germany and Belgium both where we were encouraged to pay cash for a discounted rate).

I just hope places didn't raise prices to compensate.

Initially, there was quite a bit of whining in press from some of the businesses affected about how much it would cost them etc. But they will get over it.

Do the Copenhagen Card or the 24-hour transit pass include access to the train to and from Malmö? (I assume it does include the airport train to and from the main station)?

Also, is Hovedbanegården, Tivoli the closest bus stop to the train station? If so, does anyone know exactly where this stop is in relation to the station itself?

Thanks for your help!

The Copenhagen Card is valid only on the Danish side, including the trains to and from the airport -but not on the Malmö trains.

I don´t know if you have got some names mixed up. The "Hovedbanegården" means "Main Station" in Danish, and its right next to the Tivoli gardens. Or did I misunderstand you ?

A web site I was looking at (I don't have the link at hand) stated the above as the "suggested" place to catch the #66 bus to go from the Station to the Operean.

I plan to go out to the Operean the day before my scheduled performance to get some photos, so I will have a chance to locate the stops (unfortunately the guided tours of the interior of the theater are only given on weekends) :(

Thanks again, cph_flyer for your invaluable help :) ^

Just got back from CPH. Used the Copenhagen Card for all transit. To get to Malmo, we paid about an extra $10 each way (I think it was 120KR round trip).

Yes , you can take bus 66 to the Opera from the street between Hovedbanegården and Tivoli. If you exit Hovedbanegården towards Tivoli you´ll notice a "bus island" at your right hand side. You can´t miss it. Just make sure you take the 66 in the right direction "Holmen / Opera". Frequent on weekdays, one at about every 10 minutes.

My recollection is that no, the tripto Malmo is a special ticket. You can get it easily at the vending machines or the counters at the train station.

I'm not 100% certain but I would guess so-- the train station is right next to Tivoli so I can't imagine you can get much closer (or that a bus runs from the train station to Tivoli!).

From the other side, the Malmo Card reduces the cost of the train travel to Copenhagen but doesn't make it free. (10 or 20% discount IIRC.) I'd be surprised if the Copenhagen Card makes crossing the O-bridge free and know that I've paid to cross the bridge despite having the Copenhagen Card before.

I was charged this fee only two weeks ago, buying tickets to Operaen. Mastercard had lower fees than Diners, so I used that.

The bus stop is directly in front of the central train station, which is also opposite the entrance to Tivoli.
