2 x 8 hours in Helsinki - suggestions for things to do
Mrs secondsoprano and I have two 8 hour layovers in HEL - one in mid-November during the day, and one in mid-December between 1530 and midnight. We have never been to Helsinki before and are unlikely to go again.
First leg, I assume 8 hours is plenty of time to get the train into the city, coffee, check out a gallery or two, maybe the rock church, maybe a ferry to the fortress island, then back to the lounge for a bite to eat. Second leg, I'm thinking it's cold and dark and maybe not leaving the airport at all has a lot going for it? Or am I being too much of a wuss? (I mean, presumably life goes on in winter, but I am Australian, so have barely ever seen snow, much less attempted to travel in it) Thoughts, ideas, suggestions much appreciated. |
Security+train to Helsinki, tram+walk to ferry: 2 hours waiting for ferry + ferry to fortress Island 1 hour walking part of island(s) 2 hours ferry back + tram and walk to railway station + wait: 1 hour train to airport + security: 1,5 hours 8 hours should be enough but not much time for anything else. :) |

Don’t pass up the opportunity to have a look around Helsinki. As you say you may never be their again but you might find you like it and want to make a return visit in Summer. The train into Helsinki from the airport is quick and easy and will end at the central railway station that is within easy walking distance of most of the things you want to visit. You might consider buying a day pass before you get on the train which will then cover to and from the airport and all of the trams and metro in Helsinki. You could use the Trams as a kind of hop-on-hop-off sightseeing feature. I think the day pass which includes the airport is 15 Euros each.I would leave the visit to the fortress off your plans and save that for a return trip in the summer. You can combine doing some outdoor things, walking by the harbour or design district or church in the rock, with some inside things, visit a museum or gallery do some shopping in Stockman or Kamppi Mall. You can even take a tour of the city on the Koff tram and drink a beer while you are doing it. The weather is going to be cold but not that cold. You are more likely to get some rain than snow in November or December. Temperatures may be in the 3 or 4 degree range during the day. Sunset on November 15 is at 3:50 and on December 15 is at 3:11. Many stores will start having their Christmas lights on by Mid November or early December so they will look very nice and worth seeing.

Helsinki CBD during the holiday season is something to experience: Christmas markets at Senate Square and all over the city, Christmas window displays at Stockmann Department Store, ice skating rink at Helsinki Railway Square, Christmas lights everywhere. This is something you don't experience in Australia during the Christmas season.

The lights and displays in the city are lovely. I always walk through the city center, stop at Faser for some chocolate, find myself a cup of glug, and just enjoy the sights. Pitch black darkness before 4pm may not be something you have seen before, but the Finns are used to it and they make the best of it by brightening up the city any way they can.

Oh thank you Sometime, Peregrine and MissJ. Now I'm excited again!

I have a 13 hour layover at HEL on 12/26 and I plan to head downtown. I was in Helsinki back in July and I enjoyed it and think you will too. This was a particular gem I loved:

Yes definitely go out, but it is likely to be a lot colder than you are expecting, even now that I've warned you it will be colder than you are expecting.

Thanks for the updated info on the Koff tram. Having usually spent summers in Helsinki I wasn't aware of the schedule. I must say though having been on a regular tram on a Saturday night some of the "locals" seem to be making it their own beer tram. At least I think it was beer they were drinking, but on second thought perhaps it was Koskankorva (sp?).

I just came back from a 25 hour layover in Helsinki. It is definitely colder than I expected, it's mostly wind chill so pack accordingly!
But the city is tiny, you can walk to a majority of the tourist attractions. The ones that are a little further, like Rock Church or Sibelius Monument, are an easy tram ride from the center. |
