Hotel in Malmo vs Copenhagen?
We are 2 seniors, and will have a few days in the area before a cruise leaving from Copenhagen the third week of August. Nicer budget hotels seem to be scarce in Copenhagen, but are available near the main train station in Malmo with breakfast included for about half the cost. We made a changeable booking at the Story Studio Hotel in Malmo, which seems to be both very nice and a real bargain for an upgraded room. Are we making a big mistake by basing ourselves in Malmo instead of Copenhagen? We would need to take the train from CPH in any case. Thanks for your kind insights and advice!

Copenhagen has a lot more to offer for visitors than Malmo, so I assume that you will be travelling to Copenhagen on most if not all days.
But as you will be close to the station then this is not difficult with the train, which does not take too long, about 40 mins to Copenhagen-H from Malmo-C. Of course, you then need to get to/from your hotel and destination on each side. There are about 3 trains per hour. So as long as you have plenty of time and are prepared to factor this in, then it can save you money on your hotel. But, with the fare costing about 111 Kr each way per person then this will soon add up! So you need to calculate what will be cheaper and easier for you after you have factored this into the cost. Oh, and there is no discount for seniors! You might be able to get it cheaper if you look for a multi day ticket, but you need to ask at the ticket office as there is no information about this online. Also be aware that there are still border controls when travelling from Denmark into Sweden, so make sure that you always have your passports with you. |
I spent a week or so in southern Sweden based in Malmo several years ago. The city itself had a couple of days worth of things to see, but I took day trips by quick train ride to Lund and Ystad which I really enjoyed.
But if your plan is to see Copenhagen from a base in Malmo then I'm not sure I would do that unless you are saving a huge amount of money. Last time I was in Copenhagen I stayed at a serviced apartment place called Charlottehaven. There was a train station just across the street basically for a quick trip in to the center. Very modern apartment. You can save a bit of money if you don't mind eating simple meals in the apartment. There was an Aldi across the street as well. |
Go Malmo
Stay in Malmo. Getting there is half the fun. So it is with the train journey over the bridge. As I recall, its included in the day pass & is breathtaking.

Thank you all very much! Your advice is greatly appreciated. Blessings to All.

There is a 48-hour “Around the Sound” ticket that includes one bridge crossing and one ferry crossing and unlimited travel within Skane and at least Copenhagen. It’s under 300 Swedish kronor and a good value for some. |
