Nordic getaway for Foodies... Copenhagen plus ???

My wife and are considering an 8 night trip to the southern Nordic area... We are huge foodies, so Copenhagen is the epicenter of this trip for 3-4 nights. Noma is an absolute must! We're looking in late May or maybe even June. I'd like to visit one or two other locations via plane or train in Norway, Sweden or Finland.

We prefer cities, like to walk a lot, eat our way thru the culture (not big drinkers), along with shopping and a museum/tourist attraction mixed in. We also do love nature so a day trip to somewhere a little off the beaten path is good too.

I'm aware that things seem more expensive in This neck of the woods, and we already have a trip to Japan booked later in the year, so cost is a little bit of a deciding factor (Helsinki is cheaper than Stockholm/Oslo I hear?)

Any suggestions for us first timers? I prefer this to be an intro into The Nordic region with a more extensive trip to come at a later date!

I strongly recommend a visit to Stockholm.

A beautiful city, easy flight from Copenhagen and good food choices.

I am not very knowledgeable about high-end dining there so I'll leave that for others to comment on.

Maybe look at post 21 in this thread :

I can recommend visiting some of the food halls there though, especially Östermalm Saluhal - very impressive building and lots of food :

You are of course aware that Noma requires very early booking.

PS : In my experience Stockholm is cheaper that both Oslo and Helsinki.

Regarding Helsinki, check out this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/nordi...ing-guide.html

The Euro is a little weaker now, so it evens things out a little bit.

Expense-wise I would rate Helsinki and Stockholm quite close to each other. It really depends more where you spend your money and what is exchange rate at the time. Oslo is generally more expensive, but right now NOK is quite cheap but probably not cheap enough to make up the difference.

Just noticed that Noma is not open in Copenhagen at the moment.
Link to page with information about when you can book for which periods :

Just in case you hadn't noticed.

Thanks all. I did some more research and it seems Stockholm would be the obvious 2nd destination for us to visit.

I'm aware that Noma is in Tokyo (my wife is pissed we arent going to be there until November and thus missed the popup haha), and I also just noticed that I missed the Noma onsale for May (Feb 2nd!), so it looks like we will be going in June

With 8 nights, I'm thinking 3-4 nights in Copenhagen, 3-4 nights in Stockholm and maybe a night in Malmö or another smaller city? Or is Malmö a day trip from Copenhagen? Maybe another day trip instead and base out of the 2 capitals

Malmö is an easy daytrip from Copenhagen. About 35 minutes by train.
There are good restaurants in Malmö as well :

2. of february was when Noma opened up for reservations for May - did you actually check that there was no availability left?

For a nature trip from Stockholm, try a sail to one of the islands of the archipelago.

Awesome! The Archipelago look amazing!

And yes, I checked last night for Noma... got on the Waiting List for a few dates, but I think I have a better shot at June dates when they get released!

Good luck! I'm trying for June also. Have any back up ideas in Copenhagen?

There are three Michelin one-star restaurants in Malmo -- two in the center or the city and one in the countryside a short cab ride from the Malmo Hyllie station.

From CPH airport, it's about 30 minutes to get to these three restaurants which are quite good and a relative bargain too.

Reykjavik, Iceland

The best and most innovative food I've had in the Nordic countries is in Reykjavik. There may not be a Michelin restaurant there but I don't consider that a bible to modern cuisine.

BUMP!

Heading to Copenhagen in September and so far made reservations at Den Røde Cottage. Their pricing is fair and waiting for bookings to open up at noma.

I'm up for recommendations around Iceland as well if there any must-eat places as I have a layover there. The Blue Lagoon will make me quite peckish.

Not a bad choice at all. Good luck with Noma. If you want something different entirely try a really good thai (I know it sounds odd in Copenhagen - but it quite good - and even secured itself a Michelin start): Kiin Kiin http://www.kiin.dk/

Really? I'm surprised there's no suggestions for the open-faced sandwich...

Why Thai?
