Sleeping at JFK?

Hi, if i purchase these AA tickets i would be arriving at JFK at 11.59pm from LAX.

Before any of you ask, I'm a student and my budget is very thin, so in order to save a night on a hotel I was wondering if it would be feasible to stay at the terminal and sleep till Noon when the sun comes up, then venture out into the city and eventually checking into my hotel at around 3pm. I also dont want to be venturing at night. This flight is really cheap, which is why im considering it.

Anyways, to make it all clear here is my plan:

SNA to SFO
SFO to JFK 11.59pm
Staying (sleeping) in the terminal till noon or earlier
Venturing out into the city till my check in time.

Is it even possible to sleep in the terminal??

Yeah, it's possible but you won't get incredible sleep. I slept in the AA terminal (prior to renovation) when I had a layover from LGA to JFK overnight. There was a wonderful quiet area on the second floor outside the lounge where I could lay out a sleeping bag and just sack out. Of course, it got loud around 5AM so I wouldn't bet on sleeping until noon--and this is dated information as AA has the new terminal.
I'm sure you can find *somewhere* to sleep but it won't be high-quality sleep.

Second that, the AA terminal will get really noisy by 5AM, and I mean really loud-particularly paxs heading to MIA screaming at the top of their lungs. My suggestion is that if you have an extra $50, buy a one day pass at the Admirals Club when it opens that morning at 5AM, shower and have a chance to relax (possibly snooze) in a much better environment.

Also if you need to collect checked bags, you will not be allowed to re-enter the terminal.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Any chance of just booking the redeye instead? The sleep quality will be comparable and the seat actually a bit more padded than the ground.

Thanks, great info here.

The only red eye flight on the day im heading out is $150 more per ticket and the layover was only 25 minutes. Not enough time, i think to collect backs and jump on another plane. Especially if my first flight is running late.

If you check bags to JFK you will not be able to claim them and re-enter the main terminal--especially at that time and you don't have a boarding pass.

Did you look at the SNA to EWR as an alternative or going through las on UsAir?

YOu have alternatives based on dates and if you truly need JFK---

What are your dates and how much did you want to spend on the ticket?

If you are truly strapped financially and cannot afford to changes flights or airports, this is the only thing that I can suggest. After you collect bags ride the Airtrain to about 4AM (but don't expect to really sleep) as you cannot get back into the terminal.

At 4AM go back to check in and if you can scrap $50 together, check in for your flight and buy a one day pass for the Admirals Club, which will open at 5AM. You will be able to shower, change clothes, get coffee and juice, and probably snooze for awhile. Not much of a suggestion per se, but other than changing flights/airports your only other option is to go into the city late night with bags.

I'll have my ex-wife come by your camp and wake you up. She usually works that 6am nonstop to LAX. :D

I've done this at the MIA airport....I had the money for a hotel room but was to cheap to get one.

I was really only there for about four hours.

GOOD LUCK !!

I'll tell the ex-wife you take your Starbucks black with no cream. :)

Hm, wow. Well are there any relatively cheap hotels i can barricade myself in near JFK?

JFK is the cheapest airport i can fly into. I searched and searched all surrounding airports. Leaving from SNA, LAX, ONT, LGB, BUR and Arriving at JFK, LGA, EWR. $690 for two tickets. I even checked alternate dates -+2 for my departure and returns. End of July (so I can see Yankee stadium before its yanked. Even better that my home team will be in town, Angels. This was the cheapest i could find.

So can anyone shed light on me about a cheap hotel/motel/inn that's relatively safe, cheap and comfortable near JFK?

Just don't check a bag. AA is going to ding you $15 to do that anyways, so you may as well save twice. ;)

Other posters might be able to tell you specifics, but cheap per se I don't think you will find at JFK (depending upon your definition of cheap). Might I suggest doing at Hotwire or Priceline and seeing what you can come up with.

You might check out My thread on what to do in the middle of the night in New York. The Village is open and jumping at least until 3 am, maybe until 4. Earlier weekdays, later weekends. Also remember that 3 am New York time is only 12 am your time, so you might find it difficult to go to sleep before then unless you normally sleep before midnight at home.

If you want a place to sleep, there is a hostel on the upper west side (near Broadway and 103rd) that gets good reviews, and you can get a room for about $36 for the night. They have free lockers (bring your own lock) for your luggage, or, if you are going to bring large bags, you can rent a larger locker there for the night at a pretty good price.

Check it out here.

EDIT: I meant to add that, because it's on the upper west side, the subway to the hostel from JFK will take about an hour or so, even at midnight.

You'll spend the night in a room with a bunch of other students on bunk beds, but it's only one night and if you have your stuff locked up, anyway, it's certainly safer than sleeping on the floor of JFK.

Agree with the above post. The Upper West Side area on Broadway is quite safe. Getting from JFK is easy, I would reccomend taking the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station, from there its a quick connection to the #1 subway line to 103 and Broadway. Sleeping in the airport just sucks.

Thats probably what I'll have to do, stay the night at a hostel. The legth of my trip is five days so i assume to be bringing rather large bags. And i'll be traveling with a female and you all know that they have to have one bag for all their feminine needs and one bag for their clothes. I'll also have a laptop bag. (So im guessing 3 big bags and 1 small bag) How big would their lockers be? And would the locker rental last until, let say around 2pm?

maybe this is something i should ask their staff.
