In general you would likely not notice a flight coming in at 5,000 feet, and to the extent you did notice it would be a faint sense that there was a sound in the distance - not at all the kind of thing where you'd have any trouble reading or having a conversation.

I live in the effected area of CT. They started diverting some flights on approach to EWR about 2 months ago. If I'm out on my deck on a weekend I maybe see three or four planes per day. And the noise is barely noticeable. I've seen 7x7's, MC80's, RJ's.

The corporate jets flying into HPN fly in much lower and are at least two to three times louder than the big jets flying headed to EWR.

By far the noisiest and loudest are the recreational prop planes.

FAA agrees to change NY area flight path

I thought someone might post to this thread with the FAA decision to go forward with the flight changes over the NY metro area since it was in all the major newspapers. Of course it will be challanged by lawsuits and was written as an energy conservation measure although at the recent meetings 3-4 min off the average arrival and departure were mentioned. EWR was just listed at 50% on time and the other NY airports didn't fair much better. Of course the change was needed to increase EWR flights!
