The subway/PATH/#62 bus is not that bad, as long as you don't have any bulky luggage. Takes about an hour from Manhattan to EWR, but the price is right. At certain times of the day and/or weekends when NJ Transit trains don't run as frequently, it can be just as fast as the AirTrain when you include time waiting for the train.
