B-day in NYC, what to do?

I will be taking my wife to NYC for a day( for her b-day), will be staying at the W times square, any suggestions on what to do? what show to see, where to have a nice dinner.

Is the W a good choice or should I look for something else? (using *wood points)

Thank you all in advance

If you have the points, take her to the St Regis instead of the W. Unless you like the "hip" scene which the W purports to be. The St Regis is elegant and old world. Right off 5th, I think it's a better location but then again, I'm an east side snob. ;) http://www.starwoodhotels.com/stregi...?propertyID=81

Thank you for the responses. I do have another couple of questions, should I buy the show tickets ahead of time or deal with the concierge? How much for a cab ride into times square? I'm I better off taking the subway?

Thanks again

I'm a west side snob myself, but I'm also a Times Square hater (I work 2 blocks from it, it gets very tiring very fast, trust me...), so I'd suggest the W on Union Square... not too "old", but not too "hip"...

I'd buy the tickets ahead myself... better be safe than sorry

A cab ride from the airport into Times Square will go $40-55, depending which airport. From the St. Regis, $5-6 bucks. I'd take a cab (subway will cost the 2 of you $4, plus the hassle)

Have fun!

Some suggestions

Agree completely that they St. Regis is better for a b-day than the W Times Square.

Some dinner and activity suggestions:

'Couples' massage at the 4-Season (57th St.) or Penninsula Hotel- very cool.

Carriage ride through Central Park (over rated generally but you have to do it once!)

Dinner:

Rainbow room at Rock Center

Tavern on the Green

the Four Seasons (not the hotel)

Just some ideas,

Jayson

1. St. Regis
2. W Union Square
3. W Times Square

What are you looking for in your dinner?
Hip lux? If so, try WD-50
Hip French lux? L'Altelier at the FS
Classic French lux? Daniel, L'Bernandin, Jean Georges
Mid-level hip? Stanton Social, Cafe Gray
Hip steak? BLT Prime, Wolfgang's

I think Cafe des Artistes is one of the most romantic restaurants anywhere, and it's just a short cab ride to/from Broadway theaters. Read about it on their website and look at the menu. It's kind of old-fashioned, but then I'm an old-fashioned kind of guy.

I agree - stay away from Times Square.

The W on Union Sq. is nice and the W on 39th and Lexington is also nice.

St. Regis is great if it's in your budget.

For a romantic birthday dinner:

One if my land, Two if by Sea
Bouley
Chanterelle
Cafe des Artistes

Get show tickets ahead of time. You'll pay alot extra through hotel concierge for last minute seats.

One more suggestion: Aquavit

Try the tasting menu (with the pairing booze). To die for!

And Per Se, if you can get a table... I'm still waiting (and saving $$ for it...):p
