Contactless Payment on PATH

I didn't see a thread on this, but it looks like PATH is starting to accept contactless a la "TAPP"

https://www.panynj.gov/path/en/modernizing-path.html

I tried it out at Hoboken and it seems to work the same as with OMNY. The reader even looks the same as in MTA stations.

PATH has launched a pilot of TAPP, or Total Access PATH Payment, a new contactless fare payment system. With TAPP you can pay for your ride directly at the turnstile with a contactless credit/debit card or smart device.

The initial TAPP pilot is available at 33 Street, Harrison, Hoboken, Journal Square, Newark amd World Trade Center stations [sic]. As the pilot continues, the system will gradually expand to additional turnstiles and stations.

TAPP turnstiles do not accept SmartLink or MetroCard. Please continue to use non-TAPP turnstiles when paying with these fare media. TAPP does not accept OMNY.

Wonder what they will do with smartcards once this is fully implemented. I have like 200 trips that I never use since I switched jobs (needed to drain my wageworks card)

It was brought up here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/new-...yc-subway.html

I use a SmartLink card that I fund periodically via WageWorks and haven’t received any communication on any discontinuation and migration to TAPP.

Phase 3 and 4 of the TAPP roll out includes a TAPP card and phase out of SmartLink and MetroCard acceptance. There is no integration between the two system expected at this time.

They will need to do something about the people with smartcards that were promised they never expire

This is Port Authority we are talking about. PA can care less about promises, much less the actual needs of customers/riders.

Also, it's Port Authority. I bet we have at least another decade before they fully phase out the SmartCard readers on the PATH turnstiles.

From PATH's website:

SmartLink will retire in 2026

After 19 years of service, PATH is planning to fully discontinue SmartLink in the Fall of 2026. Customers should use the remaining balance on their SmartLink Cards by Fall 2026. The exact date of when SmartLink will no longer be accepted will be announced at a later time.

As of May 4th, 2026, TAPP will have all full fare products that SmartLink previously offered. For more information, please visit TAPPandRide.com

All SmartLink Card sales and refills will end on May 31, 2026 for most customer groups*. You will no longer be able to purchase new SmartLink Cards or refill them with any fare product.

*This does not apply to reduced fare customers and customers receiving direct loads from a transit benefit provider. These customer groups will be migrated to TAPP this summer.
Also,

As of Monday, March 30, you can only purchase 1-, 7-, and 30-Day Unlimited Passes with SmartLink.

If you would like to purchase trips, including bulk discounted trip bundles with TAPP, please visit TAPPandRide.com.

And all still with no word on what will happen with our SmartLink trips which were sold with the understanding that they would never expire...

Recently, I was in their customer service office in Journal Square (Jersey City) since I had other business there in Journal Sq... I asked about transferring the balance on the Smartlink card to a new TAPP card, they said it can't. be done, the two systems don't talk to each other.

Then I asked about getting a senior TAPP card, and they tell me they aren't providing them yet..

I ask how long before the use of my Smartlink card is shut down, they say, maybe near the end of 2026, there will be plenty of public notification...

I too, bought my rides on Smartlink in good faith with a promise they'll never expire. I kept mine loaded and when I retired a couple of years ago, I had 90+ rides on the card I use maybe once or twice a month now. I now have a 40 ride balance. They could refund the money (sure), transfer the money to a TAPP card (not happening) or just let them stay valid forever, with the knowledge they will stop selling the cards and a way to refill them..

I would assume they'd do something similar to what the MTA did with Easypay Metrocard and refund the balances on cards once they're phased out. The MTA didn't make that clear at first, either.

If you look here it clearly says you can transfer them, but you email like they say and they say you cannot transfer. I get the systems dont talk, but they can manuallly remove from one and add to the other

https://www.pathsmartlinkcard.com/Sm...onditions.html

It is your responsibility to transfer remaining Balances to the replacement fare payment system within the Transfer Deadline. To request a Balance transfer, please contact [email protected] or call 800-234-PATH.
